Armadillos

So I've got an armadillo problem at my business right now and I plan to take em out with my bow plus a thermal unit to locate them. I've got a bow light and whatnot so I'm good there. Question for you guys is what broadheads would be good on those dillos? Also, I shoot carbon arrows if that makes any difference. Thanks!

The tough hide will get an expandable to open up well and cut a big hole. Never have shot an armadillo with a bow that did not break the arrow except on a head shot.

What kind of armadillo problem can one have? If they are tearing up the grass put out some grub control and kill the grubs and the armadillo's will go away.

Last few I have shot has been a while back, they were tearing up the landowners flower beds in her yard and she would sit up at night waiting on them and ask that I shoot all of them I could.

In Mississippi we had night crawlers in the pines close to the house and a few dillows would clean them out in short order, did not want to feed them our fish bait which they would in short order, and did not want to kill the fishbait to get the dillows to leave.

I shot a few when I was young and had the blood lust going. I just haven't seen the need to kill one in a long time. Thought about trying to eat one once but couldn't get past the smell to clean it.

I've got several thousand dollars worth of landscaping (flowers, shrubs, etc.) around my building that they're rooting through every night. Tried poison and killing the grubs. Nothing seems to work on these suckers so it's just killing time now.

Would a blunt point of some kind be any good? I don't wanna wreck too many arrows if I can help it.

You're a tougher booger than me. I hate touching the nasty things let alone trying to eat one. I bet they rank right up there with skunk and possum

Any old broadhead will work. I wouldn't shoot anything expensive at them. I'd grab the cheapest thing they had at Academy if you don't have any old ones laying around.

They're tougher than you might think! I hit the one in the pic below and was sure it would peg him to the ground and he'd die immediately, but instead of dying he snapped my arrow, took off, and ran about 50 yards before flopping around. I was doing some neighborhood pest control for a friend of mine who was having trouble with this dillo who kept digging up his flowers and plants. He'd show up about 9pm each night. His punctuality was his undoing! And yes, I washed my hands well after holding him by the tail.

Good luck - I've been dealing with a diller for a month now that's raping my front yard and flowerbeds. I'm up at random hours through the night and have only managed to encounter him once. Put a .22 short in him and thought problem was over. Nope.....even have a trap out that he has been avoiding. It's wearing me out......

I've got my work cut out for me. The thermal should help some I hope. I've got a lot of em.

I think I would just use one of those g5 small game heads... that way penetration isn't the issue you just pummel them down

I have problems with them every year. I got 6 with two shots this spring 12ga #6. That's my neighborhood shooting load.

I haven't seen any armadillo, but we have a lot of possums. They have met many fates in my yard, but the best one was driving home one night in the alley behind the house. Before the wife could say don't run him.......it was over

You do realize they are about the easiest thing to trap there is? Your way over thinking the broad head thing, your bow likely has enough energy to put a blunt in but not through one. Just get any junky head and shoot em or better a live trap and couple 2x6s and be done with.

Haven't had luck with the trap. Plus I have to cover about 80 acres they're tearing up and it's in town with lots of stuff I don't want to shoot with a rifle or shotgun so the bow is where it's at. I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow night will let y'all know how it went

My first bow kill ever was an armadillo. Those suckers ARE tough little boogers! Make a good solid hit and follow the blood. You will lose broadheads or complete arrows though. They'll run away every time and break em. Sure is fun to walk up with a flashlight and whack em tho. No need for thermal imaging. They're blind as a bat!

An armadillo was my first bow kill too, and they are definitely tough dudes. Every one I've shot has resulted in broken arrows (they were all aluminum). As others have said, any broadhead will work fine, just grab some cheap ones and go to town. They are great practice for deer season.

Funny this even came up. I've been summoned by the Grandfather to rid his house of one or two that are making a mess of his front yard. It just happens to be about 100 yards from where the pop up Will be going soon. I'll post mine when I get one, y'all do the same. Myron, text me when you go. I wanna see em!

Field point or small game blunt tip

Problem solved - all you need is some running shoes, a head lamp, and a 28 oz softball bat. Smoked two down last night - all this time trying to line up head shots with a .22 shooting shorts and I could have just used a $20 bat.....

If you will take a couple of 2x6s and lay them on the ground in a v shape leading to the opening of the live trap you can trap them pretty easily

I just noticed I have another one tearing up the backyard. I'll be up tonight with my headlamp and arrow nocked waiting for the lil sucker!

Well blunts were most effective followed by a shovel. Broad heads just bounced off. Broke an arrow with a field point. So far I concluded bow hunting them isn't super effective. I think I'm gonna go with the running shoe and baseball bat method. Them suckers aren't that fast.

Steel toe Redwing! Snuck up on one in Oklahoma on a hillside! Got a run and went for 3 points....he didn't get air but he rolled about 60 yards down hill before his gyro kicked back in!

I had an uncle growing up in South Texas that would almost crash his car if he saw one on the road. He would stop get out and whack the armored varmint with a stick he carried in his car specially for that special occasion. He would take it home and cook it in his wood burning stove fueled with mesquite, and he called it bar-b-que.
This was in the early 1950's I was probably five or six and I really enjoyed sharing of his bounty, I remember it tasting like pork. I ate a lot of things back then being raised by grandparents who were born at the turn of the century, not knowing any better.

Too bad my uncle Joe has dearly departed, you could turn him loose in a field infested with those critters and soon they would eradicated off that parcel of land.

My mom was a depression era raised woman. I learned quick trapping to skin my animals in the field and leave the carcasses for the bears. Beaver, muskrat, coon. She didn't care. Meat was meat and the family had to eat. I just couldn't get past the smell of the dillo to clean it. Haven't shot one in probably 15+ years.

I remember being a kid and coming home from baseball practice. There was a dead armadillo right under a "Don't mess with Texas" sign on the way there and on the way back there was a long neck handing out of its mouth and it was propped up just right on the pole. I thought it was funny. Kinda messed up now that I think of it.

I've done the run them down and punt them before...defiantly got a "kick" out of it... baseball bat sounds like fun too, done a rabbit with the butt stock of a .17 hmr... he got air... giggled like a school girl lol

The one I field goaled was over on ridge east of home pond by ladder stand....you've spent time in that one!

Rowel; let me know if you plan on going back to your families ranch this year, I've sure enjoyed the times we hunted there. Sure be different now that feeders are allowed. I still like that ladder stand with the exception of the fence between you guys and that crazy "I'll shoot you neighbor". I lost a good buck on that side of the fence.

A good air rifle would get it done pretty easily.

If I go may have to take care of some varmints around the house that armadillos and raccoons look classy! So maybe more business than pleasure.

Just a side note. Armadillos carry leprosy. Yup, the Biblical kind.

Yep that is true. Best to wear rubber gloves if you pick them up. Even better to use a shovel.

Yep the shovel is where it's at. Had a high tech / low tech hunt the other day. Find em with a thermal and hit em with a shovel.

You'd be surprised. They do taste a lot like pork. I ate one just a few weeks ago.

My Son and I were on an "eat what you kill" camping trip. It was windy and rainy. Fish weren't biting, squirrels and rabbits were not moving, no hogs to be seen, and our back-up rations were just about depleted.

I've been dealing with them for the last 4 years at my house. There is some BS advice being given here.

They are not easy to trap. They will still come to your yard even after treating for grubs. They eat anything living under the ground, worms, snails, bugs etc....

I used to kill them with my twelve gage until the police kept coming out. I've switched to a high powered pellet gun and it does the job. I would rather use the device Jank posted if it really works. It seems like they always come really late after your fed up going out and checking for them and fall asleep.

You're right about that. They're tougher to get than I thought.
