Buying compound bow???

Last year i hunted with a cross bow and enjoyed the rush. Took an older doe the first outting with it. I have been going back and forth on which gun to buy next. Wanting a Tikka, kimber 1911, or a B brand shotgun. But i have enough guns plus some. So which compound bow would you guys say would be a good starter without breaking the bank? Not wanting to spend over 700 for whole package but would like to go less if possible.

For that price I would probably watch the classifieds here and on other forums and look for a good used bow. For $700 you could get a real nice package deal on something a year or two old.

There used to be an archery shop in Bellville with an indoor range that would let you shoot any of the bows they had already setup.

Yes, get a used package. The depreciation of last year's bows is ridiculous, and they are 99% of what the new ones are.

Used is the way to go...

I would look real closely at the Bowtech Assassin, new or used is fine. Its a pkg. bow and a pretty darn good one for the $.

Get a good single cam bow.

I'm partial to the diamond line.

Well, I will throw in my two cents....

You can always buy used, BUT I would do so with caution. The reason I say this is there is NO WARRANTY with almost any used bow; if you don't know your DL and anything else, then you may wind up buying a set-up and then have to spend more money to get it setup for you.

With that all said, check out the Mission lineup. When I was working at a local proshop, I was selling Missions, setup and out the door for between 500-700, and it came with the warranty.

As an example: I had a guy come into the shop at least twice a week looking at a particular brand of bow, but he just didn't want to drop 750 on a new bow (bare). So what did he do? Well, he went to the "bay" and bought a used one and then brought it into the shop to have us check it out and make sure it was right for him. I asked him how much he paid for the bow and he said 700, so he saved himself 50 dollars.

When it was all said and done, he needed new strings and cables installed, needed a new cam because it was the wrong draw length, and then he wanted us to install all his stuff on the bow. The strings/cables and the new cam (installed) alone was well over $200, so here he was, now into the used bow for $900. Then it cost him almost 75-100 to have all his stuff installed on the bow. And to top it all off, he was back in the shop about three weeks later with a cracked limb. Guess what, NO WARRANTY, so the limbs and work were all on his dime. He was not a happy camper to say the least.

Almost as smooth as the Icemen is the Carbon Cure from Diamond and at 650 for the package is not bad. Catch it at the right time and it can be had with $75 Cabela's bucks for arrows or release.

I have a Mathews (great bow) and spend a bunch when I bought it, but you may want to look into Mission Archery. Mission bows are made by Mathews and have a the ability to vary the draw weight and draw length more than the Mathews bows. Also the brace height is very forgiving.

I don't think you can go wrong with most of the name brand bows but I'd shoot a few brands and see what you like. I'd also make sure I had a reasonable poundage and the right draw length as that is going to be key (hence my mention of Mission Archery)

Im a huge PSE guy. I love my PSE's and wouldnt trade them for any bow on the market.

Witht at being said, I would agree with the others here and say look at the Missions by Mathews. That is a great starter bow and you should be able to get in one brand new for your price range. I have messed around with them a little here and there and I can say that Mission is making a great starter bow.

Yes, you can look for used and more than likely find yourself a heck of a deal on a sweet bow, but you take the chance of no warranty, cracked limbs, wrong DL, etc.

Thanks guys for all of the great info. I have looked at used before and have always been scared for several of the reasons listed. So will be trying to get a new one soon. Just need to figure out the right one. Wish i could get a package bow for around 500
