Which bow to get my son??

Which bow to get my son?? - 04/20/14 05:31 PM

My youngest son Danny (13) out grew his first bow and is looking to upgrade. He's been saving his BPS gift cards and we went there today and looked at a few. Below are the links to the choices. We are going to buy it at BPS for obvious reasons. Would like some feedback if anyone has any experience with any of the below bows. They all have their +&-, the overall weight and the let off are the two factors I was focusing on. So far, the bear outbreak is in the lead. The accessories can always be upgraded.....thanks in advance.

I was actually looking at the diamond infinite edge for my son and called my local shop, while they say it's a good bow... The issues it has are that the cams can't sync up, something about how it's made. I went with a hoyt ignite

I have had no problems syncing the cams. Only problem I have with Diamond bows are their strings. You will replace them sooner then you want.

I like the Bear products, they are good stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one.

The Diamond bows are also well liked

PSE makes a great highly adjustable bow

Also take a look at Hoyt. They make a quality product, and lots of offerings for young shooters. (I know, they are not at BPS, but still worth a look)

Figure on new accessories as budget allows, and strings are going to be cheap on any of these bows, so upgrading them will also be money well spent.

Take your son to the shop, and let him shoot each one. He's the one shooting it, he needs to find the one that he likes the best.

Agree with you, have had no issues syncing the cams on an Infinite Edge.

We are new to the bow game at our house and I bought a Diamond infinite edge, I shoot fairly well for a beginner with it, my son is traditionally high on target but just starting to shoot. How does one know if Syncing is an issue and what are teh ramifications of such a problem?

MaqAttaq, Hey how goes the hunt? A few things for you to think about…..Not knowing his draw length or poundage he is able to pull I couldn't really narrow down a bow, however my advise, and just my experience, go with a single cam bow, they have a more forgiving draw and typically a person is able to pull more weight, also no syncing issues. Also something with a little longer brace height, they are more forgiving and make up for flaws in form. Axle to axle i would go with something at least 30 inches more toward 31 or 32 personally again forgiveness and ease of use. You can get a very good bow set up with these few things, one for the beginner or the most experienced shooter, over the last 35 years I have set up new archers with a multitude of different set ups, from recurve and long bows to the most radicle cam'd bow on the market, they all still have to fit the shooter. With the advise I gave you you can set up anyone and get a bow that will spit out hunting arrows well over 300 ft/sec. Good luck in your search. One last personal preference, for the most bow for your money and a very high quality bow, look at Martin, I grew up an hour from their plant in Walla Walla WA, Gail Martin is a genuine father of modern archery a great person, they make great bows, shot them for years. For a little higher end, Mathews, its what i shoot today and is an awesome bow.

Sorry forgot to mention, The Diamond bows are great bows, a division of BowTech, From my home state of Oregon, I have been to their plant as well, excellent bows. Again single cam.

Just about all youth (grow with) bows are dual cam that goes for mathews diamond bear and PSE. Generally most find dual cams have a more forgiving draw cycle. Timing all of the youth bows from those companies is easy if you know how. Timing marks on the cams are an easy way to tell if timing is needed

For $100 less than the PSE Vision, the PSE Stinger is a heck of a bow. Very adjustable and scary accurate for me.
