Preferably new, unless someone has a slightly used one with a good price

There are several good lines of bows out there that you could get into new in that price range. Even if you wanted a package bow with all the attachments you could do that. Diamond, Parker and Bear all make bows that you could get in that range. Go shoot several until one fits your fancy.

I started with a PSE recurve for $110. I still use it some or for showing people the basics. Once you can shoot barebow well and control yourself and the bow, it is time to move up to a compound and sights... or just sights on a recurve. Their simplicity is really nice.

Are you talking 400-500 with sight and rest or 400-500 before the accessories?

Find a place that allows you to shoot and start trying them out. The name doesnt really matter it just depends on what feels right. You will know it when you pick it up. I use a long bow myself. No yardages to worry about and I am deadly. Think about it. It gets you even closer to your game and makes it alot of fun. Happy hunting.

The BEST advice I can give you is to go to a PRO SHOP and speak with somebody, in person, and discuss with them what you are wanting. You can ask on these sites all day long and you are going to get people's personal opinions.

Its like that commerical with the cute blonde, I saw it on the Internet so it has to be true.

Go to a PRO SHOP and you will get the opinion of the person working here as well most of the time pushing the brand the sell and service. Go to as man PRO shops as you can and box stores that let you shoot different bows and make a decision from what feels good to you and you shoot well.

Don't get me wrong love pro shops but remember most push what the have in inventor as well, a parker dealer will push parkers, a Hoyt dealer will push Hoyt......

Like the others have said, go to a pro shop first and foremost. with that being said, shoot bows from every maker don't limit yourself. Nowadays bow makers are pretty much equal across the board as far speed goes. some of your bigger names (Bowtech. PSE) will make faster bows but speed doesn't always kill. you want smoothness and quietness. Just keep shooting them till you find what fits you. My pro shop was ready to throw in the towel when I finally decided on My Bowtech Destroyer, as it was the 7th bow I had tried out over a 3 day period. Hope You find one!!

Mission by Mathews will have a good bow in that price range. Bough my wife a menace as her first bow. The feel is different than the Mathews, but it shoots just fine.

My buddy and I have thought about setting one up as a back up for hunting trips.

Join Archery talk and look in the classifieds. You can find a really good bow with all the attachments for that much!
