Buying A New Bow...PLEASE HELP!!!

Buying A New Bow...PLEASE HELP!!! - 09/06/08 01:40 PM

Alright, here's the deal. I have hunted with the same Bear Whitetail Bow for almost 20 years. I have upgraded many times with new sights, quivers, arrow rests, etc. It's bulky, it's heavy, it's "let off" is a joke, but...I can drive tacks with it at 40 yds. Well at least I could until I left it on top of my jeep last year while unloading after a trip and forgot about it. The next morning my bow got to meet asphalt for the first time when it fell from the top of the jeep while driving down the road. Needless to say it was trashed.

Now I'm looking to buy a new bow.

Here's the facts.

I'm looking to spend $750 or less for a new, "raw" bow. I already have all of the accessories. I'm an experienced bowhunter but I would not consider myself an expert. I'm a bigger guy so I don't need to sacrifice power/performance for smaller bow. I hunt primarily whitetails and turkeys with the occasional hog thrown in the mix. I'm looking for a durable, high quality, reliable bow. There are so many choices out there, it's a bit overwhelming.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks In Advance.

Man you are opening yourself up to a ton of different answers. You should shoot as many as you can before you buy.......

Some that I have shot recently and would reccommend them to be tried are...........

Hoyt Katera.........allthough I dont like them I do believe they are a quality product and deserve consideration...

Mathews DXT..........not a bad bow, smooth and quiet, just not as blazing fast as someof the others.....

Diamond Marquis...........I was surprised at how nice this bow was to shoot..........

BowTech 82'nd Airborne..........my hunting partner shoots one and it is quiet and fast. He loves it.

BowTech 101st........saw one of these in action back in the summer and I will be owning one before too long.

PSE X Force..........own one and love it blazing fast, quiet and accurate.........

With the exception of the Katera, I wouldn't hesitate to take any one of the above mentioned bows up with me in my climber in a couple of weeks.

I got a simple 5 step program to this.
Step 1) Go to a pro shop near you.
Step 2) Ask to shoot some bows that you are interested in.
Step 3) Go to a different pro shop. Tell them you want a better deal than what the other shop was offering you.
Step 4) See if they will let you shoot some of their bows.
Step 5) If you don't get kicked out of the store and you get a better deal, BUY IT!

Good advice. Mainly find one that suits you. Don't worry about brand name, because the deer don't care what you shoot. Just shoot several before making ANY purchase. That way you can at least be assured you have the right bow for YOU!

I recently bought a Mathews DXT from Smithfield Archery in Fort Worth. I was in the same position as you. I needed to upgrade. Stan took me to the range and let me shoot the DXT and I was hooked. It was very somooth without hardly any recoil. The bow was about $758.00 without the accessories.

As far as choice I believe hunterted has more miles on bows than most of us.
I would check out some of last years models, exp. mattews drenalin. It is probaly a bit cheaper than a dxt depending on your budget.
All new ones are probably going to ride like a Cadillac compared to what you are used to. Check them out

I shoot every bow I can get my hands on. I am always in search of the perfect bow. Unfortunately there is no perfect bow. But with every year and the advances in technoligy they just keep getting better.

Bigbowhunter I bought a new DXT from Stan as well. They did not tell me to bring it back after roughly 500 hundred shots to have it tuned after initial stretching. When I had it tuned the othr day to my new arrows before season (at another location) it was 1/4" out axle to axle and 1/8" out in brace height. The top string suppressor is wore out and cable has the wrapping wore off in a couple of spots. This is after roughly 1,000 shots (I bought it new in Febuary). This would have been prevented if they had told me to bring it in and have it checked for stretch. I have not made it in to speak with them about the matter yet. As far as the bow I love it. I would reccomend (just like every other experienced archer) having any bow fine tuned to your arrows it realy makes the difference.

Shoot them all!!!
I went through all the major brands and went with a Mathews Drenalin. It is is a ford chevy thing when it comes to brands. Try not to get caught in the hype and get what is best for you.

I like mathews, but you have to shoot what feels good to you. don't go with what everyone else has. try them all and find a good one.

I shoot a DXT, love it.

I recently purchased a BowTech Allegiance after shooting 15 or so bows and this was the one for me. It retails at $660.
