new to the area and bow hunting(Ft. Hood)

Just got stationed here, went out and got myself a new bow to try it out...2012 Diamond Outlaw 65lb, 6 carbon arrows with some 100g muzzy broadheads, got the bow at a steal price ($383), walked out the door paying a little under 600, just wondering if theres any open land to hunt here besides the base, Ive driven around a bit but a lot of it is fenced in areas. Even if I could find someone to hunt with. I'll hunt anything, also if anyone knows what a typical price would be to process deer,hog, etc.

Welsome to the forum and to Cen Tex. Ft Hood has some outstanding hunting opportunites. Go down to the sportmans place there on base and they can get you pointed in the right direction.

As far as places to hunt in the area, good luck unless you are willing to pay to lease. A majority of Tx is privately owned so do not go hunting anywhere unless you have permission. The best public land hunting that you could find around that would be the closest to you would be around Lake Granger. It's prolly an hour or so from Killeen. Plenty of pigs there but I dont know why you would go out there to shoot pigs when they are all over Ft Hood.

Welcome indeed. I started my hunting career many years ago as a civilian at Ft Hood hunting deer and turkey. If Judy is still at Sportsmans center on post, she will fill you in will as she has been there for years. I hunted hard there when I did hunt there but never with a bow and no successful shots.

Another affordable idea is a day ranch like ours below. $100 hog hunts are cheap and fun or you can go after something bigger with your bow. Go hunting and be within an hours drive of home. We have hosted many soldiers from the base o we the years. Thank you for your service!

texas has over 2 million acres of public hunting lands. its like $45 to use these areas...(must have hunters ed)

also, alot of lakes allow hog hunting around them due to the over population of hogs, but you need to research it and fill out proper paperwork. sometimes they give ya a key and some acreage with rights where you can even put up a hog trap, and noone else can hunt or trap there. gl

Check out Lake Granger for year round hog hunting.

North of you is Lake Whitney and Aquilla, which I'm told is a decent place to deer hunt. And deer hunting is bow only.

Stick with the bow, a lot more opportunity to hunt. I'm always willing to go duck hunting if you want to go.

They have a good bow range on post....right behind the sportsmans center. as far as hunting the season is almost over. DB's hunting ranch is indeed a good place to go. have been there on 3 occasions and all 3 times have been fun experiences.

goosecrazy--I got rid of my s&w mp15 to get this bow, figured I can use my shotgun to hunt with for firearm season, as far as duck hunting just let me know in advance when you want to go more then likely id be down.
