Savage 110 Ultralight

Savage 110 Ultralight - 12/23/23 10:32 PM

Just picked up a Savage 110 Ultralight in 6.5prc. Mounted a Leupold VX5 3-15x44 on top.
I really bought the gun because of the weight and the proof research barrel. I already have a 6.5 prc in a Bergara B14 HMR Wilderness but it's a really heavy gun. I wanted something lighter for carrying all day when not hunting out of a blind.
First thoughts when unboxing the rifle. Wow this stock is CHEAP. Feels like something I would expect on a $600 rifle not a $1500 rifle. FYI I own a savage 116 bear hunter in 338 win mag and that stock is way better than the ultralight.
I also had trouble with starting the screws on the Picatinny scope rail it almost felt like I was cutting the threads as I was screwing them in. No I was not cross threading them and I confirmed they were 8 40 screws.
Took the rifle to the range this morning. Shot 3 different factory ammo rounds with it.
Hornady Precision Hunters.
These shot about 1.5 MOA to my surprise because these shot very well out of my Bergara.

Hornady Outfitter CX shot about .5 MOA Really impressed with these. These wouldn't hold any kind of group with my Bergara. Also wanted to be able to use these on bigger game so that works out well.

Hornady ELD Match. These shot about .5 MOA as well. Really liked these too.

I also tried to shoot Nosler Ballistic Tips 140gr but they wouldn't chamber. I haven't measured them yet but my guess is they are a little long for the savage chamber. They fit fine in the Bergara.

Overall im happy with the performance. But really disappointed with the stock. If the stock was better im sure the groups would be a little tighter as well. Im shooting a front bipod and rear bag and there was just a lot of flex in that stock.

Just wanted to give my personal feedback with this rifle.

Gun owners appear to have become far more tolerable of plastic these days than in years past. And I’m sure gunmakers are happy for it since it’s quicker and often cheaper to fill a mold than to machine metal and cut, carve, and finish wood. I’m old school where the quality of a stock is measured by its overall grain and depth of the checkering.

I too am surprised Hornady's Precision Hunter ammo wasn't a top performer. It has always shot very well in every make and model of rifle I own, including several made by Savage.

Dan,
I was very surprised by the precision Hunter as well. It as a side note I have a browning a bolt 7 mag that hates the precision hunters as well. It likes cheap bullets like sierra game kings or core looks. Besides that rifle and this ultralight I’ve never seen any other rifles not like the eldx

I have a have 110 UL in 308 win. I agree, the stock sucks. I replaced it with a Stockys Carbon fiber ultra light. It required a LOT of fitting but overall I like.

Good to know. What did you have to do to make it fit?

The stock inletting was too narrow for the action, I had to open it up quite a bit. I also had to add pillars to get the distance correct between bottom metal (plastic) and the action to allow proper feeding. I also had to open the barrel channel some.

Good looking rig. But that doesn't look like a ultralight. Unless they switched to a proof research barrel recently.

Either way thanks for sharing the article.
