Your most accurate rifle - 02/03/23 02:55 AM

I want to hear about your most accurate rifle. I own some expensive guns but my tikka 308. Out shoots all of them. This is a 6 shot group

My most accurate that i currently own is a tikka 270WSM.

One of the most accurate I’ve ever had was a 700 sps tactical (I think) in 308. It was a 24” bull barrel, and it shot daaaaaaang good.

Savage model 12 in 6.5CM. The one that suprises me most is a PSA in 300BLK that consistently shoots 3/4 moa.

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/03/23 03:24 AM

I have a REM 700 made in the 70’s. It is a 222 that I traded for. The guy was looking for a gun for his 11 yr. Old.
He had cut the stock off with a hacksaw to fit the boy. Then he cut the barrel off with the same hacksaw. It is now 18” long with a angle cut barrel. It has a 3 x 9 Leupold Gold Ring. Several people have put 5 in a nickel size hole. I have never tried to recrown the barrrel or replace the stock because it shoots so good

Rem 700 LTR .308. It’s a boarder line 1 hole rifle with federal gold medal match. Had class 3 shorten it to the flutes. Sold it here a while back and bought it back. Will be a rifle I pass down.

I pulled this 5 shot group at Target Master’s indoor 50 yard range with my TacSol X-Ring 10/22 with Kidd heavy barrel, Magpul stock, bx trigger, Burris XTR 2 3-15x50mm. I tested over 20 different ammo brands, and it liked #16 best (sk long range match)

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/03/23 04:16 AM

Have had a bunch of bolt guns over the years that could hold .6" groups for long periods and would occasionally do much better on a very still day right at dawn. Semi auto wise I have had a few NM ARs that have shot as well as the best bolt guns that I owned in the same chambering. I also LOVED shooting M1As and M1 that were worked over but they were never as accurate.

Only enough I once had a Norinco SKS that I simply couldn't miss with when using good ammo. I was as accurate as one of my good M1As.

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/03/23 01:58 PM

I have 3 that shoot extremely well - a 220 rebarreled years ago by Rifles, Inc, the 260 that Chad had done for me, and the 223 rebarreled by Horizen Firearms. I’d have to have a one guy vs 3 rifles shoot off. But it’s probably the 223, a Ruger Hawkeye.

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/03/23 02:01 PM

Not sure which one is most accurate. Usually tinker with the gun and or ammo until they shoot like I want them to:

.223 Wylde AR I put together, Aero parts, Geissele trigger, Nosler Match Grade 77gr HPBT, Infiray Bolt TL35, group to the right were the first 6 or so shots moved it left and down a hair, believe that is an 8 shot group 100 yards:
[Linked Image]

6.5 Creedmore, Springfield Waypoint 2020, Mark 5HD, Hornady SST 129gr, 3 shot group at 550 yards:

7mm-08 AR I put together, Aero parts, Geissele trigger, Barnes Vor-TX 120gr TTSX BT, Vortex Strike Eagle, 5 shot group 100 yards:

Here's a 3 shot group, first shot from 100, second shot from 200 (both are the top POI), then the third shot also from 200 during this past deer season. This pure hunting rifle did something similar at 300 about 5 years ago when I verified my set up and has been piling up game ever since. I posted it, I'll dig around for it.
Factory rifle,no modifications, off the shelf ammo.

Couldn't say. I have severely consistently accurate rifles from several different brands of bolt actions and several ARs.

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/03/23 03:30 PM

Remington 700 Classic 17 Remington. best group .125 inch 2 shot group at 100 yards was its first group with factory ammo. Haven't done that again unless in a 5 shot group that I didn't check it at 3. The thing likes to run clean after 20 shots it starts to open up some, by 50 it is more in the 1" groups. Numerous 5 shot groups under .2" I rarely shoot it any more but still fun to take out on occasion.

I posted my 22lr above, but I have a Rem 700 5R Gen2 with a trigger tech and Burris XTR 2 that is the most accurate bolt gun I’ve ever had. This was my best 5 shot group from the 100 yard Garland Public Range when I first sighted it in. I’ll never get rid of either of them.

For what it is, my 1955 HRA M-1 Garand. With it's iron sights, handloads, and me doing my part, I've shot a few 1" 4-5 shot groups at 100 yards. Can't imagine how it would shoot with a scope.

My most accurate hunting rifle is my Ruger M77 Mk.II in 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser.

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/03/23 06:07 PM

Over the years, I've had a few rifles that shot very well. I was practicing getting dope for a match with my original Surgeon 260 Rem, and shot a 4 shot group at 600 yards at 1 5/8". My first 7mm/300 Win Mag shot a 7", 3 shot group at 1 mile. I thought that one was pretty nice. My current Surgeon 6.5x47 Lapua will stack them almost in the same hole at 100 yards. I have hit the .25" dot multiple times on the KYL stage (Know your Limits) in competition when shooting the 1", 3/4", 1/2" and 1/4" dots, and that's on a warm barrel. But a 1/4" dot plus .264" means all you have to shoot is better than .514" to break the line for the points. For some rifles, that's very doable.

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/03/23 07:50 PM

My overall most accurate is a home built Savage 308 with a Shilen barrel. I've talked about it alot.

My single best group at 300yds is from my wife's Tikka 223 varmint simply in a KRG Bravo chassis. I'm sure others do much better but I was extremely proud of myself. Even had some very moderate wind that day.

Took a Sako S20 6.5 PRC out to the range today for it's maiden voyage. Topped it with a new to me Arken EPL 6-24x50. After boresighting the old fashioned way, the first 5 shot group with Norma 143g target load went into a nifty .412 group. A little surprised, I tried again and this time 5 shots went into .344, literally one ragged hole. A 3 shot group with Hornady 143gr ELDX factory loads soared to .655, followed by a 3 shot group of 147 ELDM factory loads at .781. The thumbhole stock is ergonomically superb.

It’s a pretty good toss up between my tikka t3 stainless 7mm-08 and my Remington 788 223. My personal best group at a 100 yards with the 788 and factory loaded Remington 55 gr psp. All holes touching making one big clover leaf hole.

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/04/23 04:45 AM

Super slick action, feeds great, awesome trigger, stock is a little plasticky but ergonomically fantastic. The adjustable cheek piece works well but a little cheesy if you ask me. Can't argue with results though.

Almost bought one of those when I was looking for my 7mm Rem. Mag. Got hands on with one at Scheels and yes the ergonomics were great. I went with the Tikka Roughtek, couldn't make myself love the "looks" of the stock on the Sako and the performance of my two other Tikkas. You did good.

Nearly bought one in 6.5 PRC but the stock was a deal-breaker. Just too plasticky for that $.

Re: Your most accurate rifle - 02/06/23 06:51 PM

New to the forum. This seems like a good place to make my first post

My newest favorite is my CZ457 in .22 LR. I put a Dead Air Mask on it and even shooting subs it's pretty accurate.

[Linked Image]

I have a plate that I can hang exactly 45 yards from the back door. You can see the fencepost that I hang the plate on in the first photo. Here's a shot from the CZ. 5, make that 4 rounds (we'll just ignore that little blip up in the top left corner near my traffic awareness finger) into the plate. I was leaning against the door jam when I shot this. It's a wonder that I hit anything.

[Linked Image]

My .20 PPC shoots pretty well but I haven't had a lot of time for load development.

[Linked Image]

This is not my target. It's the target that Shawn Carlock (builder) sent with the rifle. It'll do smile

[Linked Image]

This is my .338 Edge and my dad's old .30-.30. I'm almost 65 and he bought it well before I was born. The .338 Edge has not been shot beyond 800 yards, however, I've come to realize that if I miss when I shoot this rifle, it's my fault. That's usually the case of course, but this rifle is a shooter. Best I've ever owned.

[Linked Image]

Here's the target that Shawn sent with this rifle. For the longest time I was loading 94gr of H1000 and 300 gr SMK's or Bergers. It shot ok but not quite to this level. His paperwork says 90 gr. and while felt recoil isn't much. 90 grains of powder is easier on the brass and shooter.

The current project is an 8.8 Blackout. It's almost ready to go.

500 yards in high winds with a 2.5" KYL in 18 mph winds. This is from my Surgeon 308 Win, shooting down at Rifles Only. First shot went just a touch high right. corrected, and drilled the 2.5" target at 500. 175 VLD at 2760 fps. That 308 is sickly accurate.

Remington 700 Varmint in 308 with the barrel cut to 18”.

These groups are 150 Interlocks sitting on top of 46.5 grains of Varget. Gun shoots even better with ELD Match. I added an HS Precision stock, Timney trigger and started hand loading for the gun. For a factory Remington barrel, it shoots pretty dang good.
