THF Hunter's challenge 2.0 Oct 24 - 08/18/21 10:20 PM

There will be nine stages. 4 rounds per stage except for one will be 5 rounds . 90 second time limit.
30 caliber and smaller will be permitted. The stages will be set up in hunting type positions and scenarios. This match is for hunting guns not tactical guns . I will be coming up with a set of guidelines for acceptable rifles at a later date . If you hunt with your tactical rifle you will have to find another one to use. Distances will be from 100 yards to 400 yds . Match will start at 8:00, we will have a safety meeting and then start the match. The match will cost $50 per adult and $25 for kids 16 and under they must be supervised by an adult. We will be paying out cash for first second and third place . Location valley view Texas at a private range. Directions will be sent to you after you register.

At the beginning of the match there will be an optional Cold bore challenge at 400 yd for $10 per person , one shot closest to the center wins.

If anyone would like to donate merchandise or services to a prize table let me know. The shooters would greatly appreciate it.

Thx, SR

Yep, right in the middle of bow season. It just so happens that Saturday is youngest's birthday, so I'll be in town. I'll probably be able to make it.

If it looks like a tactical rifle, feels like a tactical rifle and smells like a tactical rifle. It's probably a tactical rifle.

So I'm having a hard time with writing down specific rules for the gun. The easiest way I can think of doing it is send me a picture of your rifle if you think it is questionable and I will give you an answer. You can either post a picture here on the forum or you can PM me a picture or you can PM me a message and I will send you my phone number and you can text it to me if that is easier for you. I'm not trying to be difficult I just want this to be a match for hunting rifles if you use your full-blown tactical rifle that you use in PRS or NRL matches for hunting you might need to find another rifle for this match.
We will have a link up for registering for the match soon it will be on practice score I will let you guys know when it is up and running and posted here.

Thx SR

Just a suggestion, keep the weight under 9-9.5 pounds or so that will easily keep the prs and f-class rigs out because they are all usually 11-20 pounders.
It would be hard to limit the barrel contour, since a lot of these guys have gone to plastic wrapped barrels hammer

Re: THF Hunter's challenge 2.0 Oct 24 - 09/08/21 02:07 PM

Don't forget a shot like so many take in Texas out of a truck window. Killed a lot of deer and hogs from that shooting position.

As far as gun restrictions I like TABs suggestion of weight. That would exclude a lot of the "target rifles".

ARs would be fine to me as long as they meet the weight restriction.

Re: THF Hunter's challenge 2.0 Oct 24 - 09/08/21 02:51 PM

1. Factory Stock
2. Factory Barrel
3. No chassis systems (includes KRG, and factory chassis).
4. If you really want to make it fun, either capped turrets or no dialing for elevation or wind.

I could still play. Rem 788, factory everything (except trigger), Burris Veracity scope with capped turrets.

Add a stage way after sun down, while the range officer holds a spotlight.

Does this include custom rifles? Built that way..
Lots of guns come in a bravo chassis now from the factory I personally don’t think that’s a good rule.. but definitely get your point.

If senior sticks to weight, that would probably exclude the chassis guns.

Re: THF Hunter's challenge 2.0 Oct 24 - 09/08/21 03:21 PM

Just for curiosity I just weighed 3 rifles in my safe of what I “hunt with”

One is a 700 5r in 300 win mag with a leupold 4.5-14x mark 4 it weighed 10 pounds 13.4 ounces, may as well say 11 pounds

Another is a Stick built 700 in 6.5-284 with a 27” number 4 brux barrel with a 4.5-14 leupold it weighed 10 pounds 8.1 ounces

The 3rd is a 700 5r in 308 with a 20” threaded barrel with a leupold vxr patrol scope 9 pounds 7 ounces..

So my weight limit idea sucks! Everything I own is pushing 10 pounds plus.

Out of curiosity, I weighed the Rem 788...9.7 lbs. Much heavier than I thought it would be. Lightest "hunting" rifle that I have is a 77/357 at 7.5 lbs, but that is only good out to 100 yards. BAR was 8.8 lbs, but the scope on that one isn't going to get me past 300 yards.

It's expensive, but a fun way to do this is buy 5 Ruger American Predator rifles in either .308 or 6.5 and equip them all with the same optic.

I'd love to make this, but that's my wife's birthday. I'm not even going to consider asking. lol

I shot in one of the early Hunter's Challenges. That year I was one of two that didn't have a tactical style rifle.

If you do another after deer season, I'll be in.

Sorry things have been a little slow moving here the last few weeks I've had a little health issue I needed to take care of. But we are ready to rock and roll now baby !
RULES
1. Rifle weight with scope 12 lb and under. I will have my scale there and we will be going by it.
2. You will only be allowed to use one bag for the whole day I don't care if you use it front , back or middle . It cannot weigh more than 2 lb.
3. You must use the same bipod for the whole day.
4. No ARCA rails on your rifle.
5. Last reminder if you're not sure if your rifle will be considered a hunting rifle send me a picture and I will give you a yes or a no. If you show up the day of the match and I do not allow your rifle and you did not send me a picture you will not be refunded.

Match registration will be posted tomorrow.

Deadline to register for the match will be October 20th at 7: 00pm.

Thx SR.

Why do you say that? Not many people signed up? I am waiting until the last minute to sign up to make sure that I can swing it in my schedule. Also, I think the fact that it is scheduled during bow season is keeping some away. I have plans on Saturday that is keeping me out of the woods, otherwise, I would not even be considering this match.

No matter the rifle weight value and even if you “ donate “ your money because your rifle is fat ,it’s equivalent to a range day and a great tune up for the hunting season

If I do not have 16 shooters registered by October 17th I am going to cancel the match and go to Oklahoma for opening muzzleloader.

Good tune up for deer season.

Looks like the Pease River

All but the last one, you'd be right. Want to go? I'll guide you as long as you hang around for my kill as well. It's only three miles, on foot, one way.

Man when I was on a lease, we sunk a jeep in the Pease, then two 3/4 Ton 4X4 pickups trying to pull out the old Jeep Cherokee. When the land owner finally got back from town, drunk, he got his tractor and BARELY got everything out of the river.

5 mile walk back to camp twice. ROUGH country, great stories. Unfortunately my LONG walking days are over

Modify your gun restrictions and you might get more. Chassis bolt action guns permitted?

This is a match for hunting rifles. Very few people are walking around the woods or in the mountains carrying rifles weighing over 12 lb. You can bring a chassis rifle to this match.

Re: THF Hunter's challenge 2.0 Oct 24 - 10/13/21 09:10 PM

makes sense to me, everyone has a hunting rifle, some are custom built, some aren't. Its meant to be a FUN match shot with Hunting rifles. Not an Olympic final for a gold metal.

There should be a weight limit. I know some drive right up to their deer blind and unload a heavy rifle (over 10lbs) into the blind. I just agree with Senior on this match. I just have a rehabbing knee or I would be there "donating" my fee.

I understand , to some, its all about winning, beating the old fart with a nice gun. I love it when the young ladies beat me (shooting!!! yall get yo minds out the gutter). Makes me happy their parents have gotten them involved in our sport.

Most of yall know Korean Redneck on here. He brought his girlfriend to a Hunters Challenge match out at Jason's cool range. She had a BONE STOCK, plastic stocked .243 . She did great and had a blast doing it.

anyway, Senior shoot you a big buck with that muzzle loader and lets try later for 16 shooters.

My sentiments as well. He has matches throughout the year for unlimited rifles, if you’re not showing up for them then why would we think you’re going to show up for this if we would only bend the rules to your liking. This is not news, it’s been pinned at the top of this forum since spring.

There will be no course of fire published ahead of time.

The deer coyotes and pigs do not tell you ahead of time where they're going to be standing.

Re: THF Hunter's challenge 2.0 Oct 24 - 10/24/21 08:52 PM

I want to thank all of the guys for being so welcoming. My son and I had a great time and his confidence in his rifle is a lot higher today after the event. Patience especially with someone who does not find things as easy for most of us said a lot about you guys. Thank you!

On the way out I told my son we met a great group of guys today and I was impressed with how friendly everyone was with no exception. He said "Yes, and the only Jackass was the one who would not let me shut the gate!" At least one of you got to witness that one. LOL

Again, thank you to all and especially to Senior for hosting and allowing us to come in late in the process.

Today was a challenging day for the shooters with the wind but I thought that everybody shot well. I definitely enjoyed the group of guys that we had out shooting today , everybody was polite helpful and safe.

I just want to give a special thanks to Michael H for taking pictures for me today and publishing them on here , I also want to say thank you to John h and Diana h for donating a nice set of hunting knives to the match .

Re: THF Hunter's challenge 2.0 Oct 24 - 10/25/21 01:57 AM

It was nice to get back to the basics with realistic shooting positions and equipment. A good friendly environment helping with wind when we could.Senior had the course ready with nice twist on some of the stages relevant to hunting and not who had the most pillows.

From memory

1. Tikka 308 With a Leupold cds
2. Custom lightweight 6.5 c with a Bushnell scope
3 Tikka 6.5 c with a Leupold hunting scope ( I think)

Others included a R 788 308, CZ mini action 308, An Alamo 6.5 c shorty, 2-3 flavors of Ruger And a couple I don’t remember

Lots of basic guns and happy faces hitting 300-400 yard targets in some stiff wind.

Ready for the next one

Re: THF Hunter's challenge 2.0 Oct 24 - 10/25/21 10:44 AM

The .22 LR surprise stage was a cage rattler. Senior holds up an old CZ trainer with original irons and tells us we have targets at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. 12 rounds and two minutes. Start at 25 and can't advance to the next range until you get impact. 1 point per hit, 1 point for each remaining round in the mag, divided by two for a max stage score of 6. Each range had to be shot from a different position and rest of your choice.

Looks like some good shooting on that stage by some, with several getting the 12 hits. Fun little addition to the match

James - you are winning at the dad thing... I smiled when you told me that y'all are making a plan to hunt-fish together every weekend. Keep up the good work, and stay after those skunks!!

Had a great time yesterday shooting and putting some faces to names. Thanks again Senior for putting on the event with a smaller than expected turn out.

Happy huntin fellas!!
