6mm remington (pics added) - 04/27/09 04:23 AM

Well my father-in-law surprised me today. He offered me his old 6mm remington. It needs alot of work. I think his son was hacked that he offered it to me but then again he never showed any interest what so over. Only became "interested" when the subject came up.

I thanked him but told him to give it to his son. But I said if he does not get it repaired in 3 months to give it to me. We'll see what happens. My money is on me getting the 6mm.

Below are some pics of the rifle before going to the gunsmith.

honestly, JJH, I am not sure. I am told that it was built for him by his father according to grandmother-in-law. Anyway it "6mm remington" stamped on the side and a mauser action (if i am not mistaken). When you bolt open the chamber the fire pin comes straight back and is ready to fire when bolt closed. It also has Leupold Scope. Either a MX-3 or Mark 3...I cannot remember. when looking through the scope it has german#4 like sights. As far dating it I would say 60's maybe even 50's. I will have to ask.

aglock

those old mausers like that are probably some of the most under-rated guns out there.

a lot of them look rough and beat up but in my experience they are some of the best shooters you can get your paws on.

i have one i inherited when my grandpa passed a few years ago (chambered in 30-06) and i've taken 2 deer with it and a couple of pigs. these guns are tough, rugged, and will hold up for years.

i recently bought another one chambered in 257 roberts (simular to the 6mm), and it is a sweet shooter. i had the stock refinished and it is truly a beautiful rifle now. it did look rough when i got it, but after some TLC i can tell you this will be a gun i will keep around.

the other good thing is that these guns are usually heavy, and it calibers like the 257 and the 6mm recoil is light.

i hope you get the gun, spend some money getting the stock refinished and you will be happy.

if it's stamped 6mm rem. it has to be from 1963 or newer.before that they called it a 244 rem.

My dad has one and it is a sweet gun, easy and fun to shoot.

Re: 6mm remington - 04/27/09 08:34 AM

very true...but it could be and older Mauser action that had a 6mm Rem barrel installed in the '60's. Would be interesting to see a pic! One thing for sure, it's a family treasure and should be treated as such, IMHO!

The barrell needs to be cleaned real bad both in and out. The action has some numbers engraved into it but i could not read them. I will ask to take some pictures of it. Kinda of tense situation between brother-in-law and mother-in-law but the old man is tired of messing with them and wants to see it put to use.

Re: 6mm remington - 04/30/09 04:46 AM

Well, i don't get the gun, per say. I have it until the brother-in-law wants it. But I get it this weekend...straight to the gun smith for a good cleaning. Yeah you could do it yourself but rather let the people who have more experience than me do it.

Can't wait to shoot back home in San Angelo in June. Taken the boy camping.

oh.... I will post pic's in the next couple of days.

Thats a nice rifle, a little stock work and it will make a good deer gun.

Looks like a 98 action, I could be wrong. Either way, congrats. The two I have don't even have the caliber stamped on the barrel!

An open question here. I've been trying to get input on some 244 ammo I can get in a trade. Reckon that would work fine in this 6mm Remmy?

Good question? Don't know. But I will try to find out.

Re: 6mm remington (pics added) - 05/04/09 05:03 PM

Should be interchangeable since the .244 was renamed 6mm remington. Found the following info which is interesting as it relates to bullet weight and barrel twist.

The 6mm Remington uses the same bullet as the .243, regardless of what it's called. That's pretty common in the gun world. The numerical name of the bullet is rarely truly the actual diameter.

Remington originally came out with the .244 Remington, the rifles for which had a 1/12" twist to stabilize bullets of 75-90grns for long range accuracy. Some folks complained because they couldn't shoot bullets of 100-105grns for deer very well.

To correct this, Remington changed to a 1/9" twist and renamed it the 6mm Remington. .244 Remington and 6mm Remington ammo is interchangeable, although loads with bullets of 100grns or more will not stabilize properly in the 6mm-marked rifles.

I dont know about that! I have 2 6mm and I have several buddies that have 6mm and they all shoot 100 grain bullets exceptionally well.

I had read the same but was not sure of "real world" applications since no one that I know or at least talk to on a regular basis has a 6mm rifle, besides me.

Caddo...were any shots out there at 200+ yards?? At a certain point the bullet could start to tumble. Not busting your chops, just curious.

6mm Remington History and General Information.
The 6mm Remington is based on the 7x57mm case necked down to .243 caliber and the shoulder angle increased by about 6 degrees. Remington introduced this cartridge first in 1955 under a different name, the 244 Remington, in 1963 Remington reintroduced this cartridge as the now popular 6mm Remington.
The 6mm Remington never caught on in 1955 as it was introduced in Remingtons model 722 varmint rifle with a 1 in 12" twist barrel, while this gave excellent accuracy and ballistics with lighter bullets in the 70 grain weight range it did not stabalize heavier bullts in the 90 - 100 grain weight range. Remington dropped the 244 Remington and reintroduced it in 1963 as the 6mm Remington chambered in a model 700 rifle with a 1 in 9" twist rate in the barrel, the change in twist rate added the versatility that was needed and heavier bullets would now stabalize.

The 6mm Remington is a good dual purpose cartridge, loaded with lighter bullets it is extremely effective on varmints, able to send a 75 grain bullet out the barrel with a velocity of 3,500 fps. the ballistics are excellent out to the 400 yard mark, loaded with 90 grain bullets at 3,300 fps. and you have an excellent deer and antelope round good for 300 yards.

The 6mm Remington is a moderate recoiling round which is comfortable enough for almost anyone to shoot. For a beginner just getting into the high power rifle sports the 6mm Remington cartridge has a lot to offer in ballistics and light recoil and is highly recommended. Also for anyone that is recoil sensitive this is a great cartridge.
