WTB Questions on .25-06 - 11/30/17 02:04 PM

I am looking for a .25-06 to add to my hunting arsenal. Would like to get some opinions on brands/models in Reba’s to longevity, warranty and of course accuracy. Would appreciate any advice.

Hunting or shooting? If strictly hunting, then I'd look at the Tikka T3X Lite or Weatherby Vanguard. If more shooting, then I'd look for a Remington 700 Sendero. There are lot's of choices but I'd start with those.

I owned the browning xbolt medallion in 25.06.. beautiful gun and the accuracy using factory ammo was above my expectations. I sold it and bought the same gun in .270 which is my preferred caliber for whitetail. This is not a crawl through the brush kind of gun, but dang, it’s a great looking rifle and great accuracy.

It’s an over bore that takes 26” barrel to get most out of it.

Great caliber, I’ve taken an elk with it, and a ton of WT’s and a few antelope.

The last 2 Rem 700 with the heavy barrels in 25-06 shot very well. They were 26" long, and had a heavy fluted barrel with high end stock. Both shot very well. I don't think they were the Sendero models, but might have been or very similar to them.

I have been researching the 700 Long range with a 26" barrel and think it is the one I am going to shop for. Any thoughts on the best place to look?

I’m not going to be shooting long distances but I want the 25-06. I will be mainly deer hunting. Price range $500-$700 without scope.

Take a look at the Weatherby Vanguard rifles. They guarantee 1 MOA and the trigger pull is nice and crisp on them. Your making a great choice with the 25-06 for deer hunting. I use Hornady Superformance ammo in mine.

Re: WTB Questions on .25-06 - 12/01/17 01:21 AM

It's true that a 26" bbl may give you everything the caliber has to offer but there's also nothing wrong with a shorter barrel for deer hunting or even long(ish) range target shooting. I had my Vanguard cut to 20" and I'm still pushing a 115 VLD 2900+ fps and staying supersonic to just under 1200 yards with 1000 ft. lbs. of energy to 500. I've shot to 800 at JG's many times with the only problem being the guy behind the gun.

In that price range look for a used Ruger, imo. Or get a weatherby vanguard. I shoot a sako a5 in 25-06 and I love that gun.

sako a5 is a great one. Also I have a 2506 in a browning abolt medallion. both shoot holes with hand loads

25-06 ammo runs a little higher than the more common .270 and 30-06. I have a Winchester Model 70 chambered in 25-06 and love it.

The Vanguard carries a two-stage trigger, but I found it no problem to become familiar with.

Winchester Model 70 is worthy of consideration, too. It's a great hunting rifle.

With todays guns, I think you could probably buy just about any of the ones above and other than personal preference and aesthetics never notice a difference for a hunting gun. I'm partial to the wby vanguards because mine has been good and they weigh a bit more than most of the other offerings, I like heavier guns than lighter ones.

Great comment, redchevy...and SO true.

.25-06 is a caliber I've never had but always wanted to try.

Agree with redchevy but would probably get a Tikka or Weatherby Vanguard in that price range.

Kinda refreshing to see a thread go this long and folks not chiming in with other "latest and greatest" caliber suggestions.

The Ruger Predator 25/06 is a low Budget Rifle.($400).
And the one I bought will shoot 3 shots in little tiny Cloverleafs.
I like.!

Here's what you need right here. Excellent price for a quality rifle. I have bought a Tikka and a couple of scopes from these folks with no hiccups:

Re: WTB Questions on .25-06 - 12/02/17 02:34 AM

I own one 25-06...i probably put more thought into its purchase than any rifle I have ever owned. It is the first rifle I bought with my own "earned" money. In 1989 I bought a used tang saftey flat bolt m77 from BB pawn in Abilene TX. It is a shooter and have owned it close to 30 years--it was my first big game rifle, and still will stack 100 grain serrias into 9/16 of an inch with boring regularity. Most of the heavy barrel Ruger tang guns I have shot were more than accurate enough. Though I have tried a number of 120s...mine prefers 100 and 117 grain RN...

I own and hunt with a Remington 700 CDL that shoots 100 grain Barnes TSX factory ammo in 1" groups. Great all around caliber and puts them on the ground with an accurate high shoulder shot. Own one, you'll love it!

My 22" barrel produces 3050 FPS with 117 grain Sierra GKs.

I will add that my Howa in 25-06 shoots great groups. I took a doe at 175 in the neck with confidence.

Re: WTB Questions on .25-06 - 12/04/17 11:01 PM

Other than not being a fan of the newer Remingtons, I couldn't argue with any of the suggestions given. The Thompson Center Venture might be another good option. I've been seriously considering one myself so if anyone has experience with them I hope they chime in. For what you would pay for one you could allocate more money for the glass.

Edit: There is also a $75 mail in rebate on the Ventures right now.

Re: WTB Questions on .25-06 - 12/05/17 12:11 PM

I'd look at anything but a Remington.

Maybe I missed it, but we still don't know what you're going to use it for? Without that and some sort of budget that's more informative than "not enough for a 26" barrel", I think it's tough to make educated suggestions. Also, do you want wood or synthetic stock, blue or stainless barrel, threaded, ?

Bluntly, redchevy is right that for a hunting gun, any Browning, Winchester, Howa, Ruger, Savage, Mossberg, Weatherby, or Tikka would be fine. For a range gun, I think your best values are Ruger, Savage, Howa, and Tikka.

I don't have any experience with the TC that Grizz mentioned.

I will be deer hunting mainly.

Re: WTB Questions on .25-06 - 12/05/17 06:41 PM

Would prefer stainless and synthetic, but mainly want an accurate reliable gun with longevity. Really leanin now towards the savage, but this accustock thing has me confused. I don’t want a cheap flimsy stock but I don’t want to have to go out and spend money on it after buying.

Re: WTB Questions on .25-06 - 12/05/17 06:57 PM

Savage Axis XP Stainless gets you everything you want. Not the best stock in the world, but if you want lightweight for hunting, stainless, etc., then that's a good rifle. Can be had for around $400.

https://grabagun.com/savage-36.html

For slightly higher quality and no stainless barrel, the Tikka T3x Lite in 25-06 is a good option:

Not many synthetic hunting rifles come with top-notch stocks nowadays. So you're probably going to have to live with something like one of those and upgrade the stock if you want down the road. I think the stock on both is decent, but it seems that opinions on stocks can be all over the map, so you might find them great or super cheap and flimsy.

Two kinds of people in this world. Those that admit Savages cycle and eject poorly, and those that don't.
