Long range rifle question.

What is the best long range gun out of the box that is a 20 or 30 caliber rifle? What is the best for the money to hit 1000 yards.

20 caliber or 30 caliber?

A Tikka, Rem 700, or Savage chambered in .243, 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 Rem, 7mm-08, 308, covers the short actions.

30-06 will do it.

7 Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag will do it.

All of them will go that far and can be done straight out of the box. The business of getting that far comes down to optics. So the better question is what scope is needed.

Sako TRG 22

The best out of the box is either a accuracy international or a sako trg it doesn't get much better than those two even with a custom built rifle. As for caliber any that those two guns come in will work fine.

Using factory ammo? At a grand not likely with any caliber if you expect great accuracy. Plus optics a must. I shoot a 284 win with a nightforce scope. as for rifles that are factory its hard to beat sako trg models. I would shoot the heaviest bullets you can find.
I care about accuracy in all of my rifles but I would spend as much or more on the scope as I do on the rifle.

I have one of the Colts and they can hang as well. Mine has a Vortex Razor 5-20 on it though.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is the choice of cartridge for factory ammo. Seen it compete in very difficult precision rifle matches and do very well. Bout the only cartridge that is a reliable performer in that arena with factory ammo, though.

Yea i had good results testing some hornady ammo in 6.5 creedmore. Seems like a good round

It's almost a too open ended question for an exact answer. First, I have to figure out will I be hunting with it, just plinking, competing with it, or want a massive round to hit hard that far out? I personally start with the bullet, then figure out the cartridge I want to use. Then comes the rifle in that caliber that I want. So, I need to answer the first 2 questions before I get the the rifle part.

I'm not a 6mm fan, so the smallest I will go is 6.5mm. So, 6.5mm, 7mm, or 30 cal would be my 3 picks. Sure, a .338 or bigger will work, be is cost in the ammo a factor? If so, stick with the smaller 3 choices.

I love my Sako TRG 42 in 300 WM. It is the most fun and hardest hitting rifle I own. A 225 BTHP at 2800+ fps hits so hard. The rifle alone is $2500+, plus a good scope. Of the high end factory rifles, a TRG or AI are as good as it gets.

If you want a budget rifle, a good Rem 700 with bull barrel and good scope on top, feeding it custom ammo will shoot sub moa. So, it will work. Free float it and bed it, and it will do ok for a factory rifle.

If you are unsure what caliber to go with, then the answer is 308! I love shooting my 308 Win. Ammo is easy to load for (or buy), and there are many bullet choices for it.

But if you gave me only 1 caliber to chose, without hesitation, it's 300 WM.
