Is a Weatherby 257 big enough? - 09/03/14 02:09 PM

i am going to Kansas in December deer hunting. Will a Weatherby 257 be enough for one of them monsters?

People take them elk hunting your got plenty gun. Use a bullet designed for deer not varmits.

A .257 Roberts would be fine, a weatherby will be plenty

Is it enough? You have to remember, that you have one of the greatest hunting implements ever made. Zeus didn't hurl lightning bolts, he had a 257wby. Go forth and do not be afraid for you have a 257wby.

I remember reading that the .257W was one of Roy's favorite. I believe he used
it on much bigger game than a Mulie.

I wholeheartedly agree with those saying it's enough. Three weeks ago I shot a red deer hind on a cull hunt with a 110 grain Accubond in 257 Weatherby and she dropped on the spot. It took her down so quick that my buddy watching through the binos thought I missed because she hit the dirt she was standing over. I love the round and it'll more than do the job.

Shot placement is more important than power.

I've taken deer over 220lbs with .257wby and never had one go more than 50yds if they ever moved after the shot.....

Two things to remember...

1. use a good bullet
2. Aim right for the middle of the front shoulder blade to give the bullet enough resistance to expand.

I brought a 257wby to Africa this year.. took, warthog, implala,springbuck,blesbok,gemsbok and even shot a kudu with it... Sadly i made a bad shot on the kudu and it took a week after i left before it was found but i belive had i put the bullet in the right place it wouldnt have gone far either. I got it 2 seasons ago and its my new favorite round!!!!

Thanks for all the input. I bought the 257 WBY. Friday and cant wait to use it. I am also going to build a custom 257.

Love my 257 mag...fast and flat with a punch. My only complaint is the price of ammo. Not a plinking gun when ammo is over 3.50 per round!

But you can buy it for $1.87 per round for the factory lead tips.

Thanks. I've been buying the weatherby nosler 117 grain - think I paid $73 + shipping last time. I'm going to have to try
the spitzer @ that price. Just curious - where would you sell brass for $1 each? I've saved 3-4 boxes with thought that I might
start reloading to save $.

You can sell the brass on the THF "trading post" or on Gunbroker.
