284 first results...success - 07/24/14 07:18 PM

I had my new 284 built and then I have been sitting around waiting on bullets. I found some 168 gr bergers and decided to give them a try until my 180 gr ones come in. I spent the night at the ranch last night and woke up at 6 this morning to try and shoot before it got hot. I started loading up rl 17 and then switched to 4350. The gun really liked it and I am going to settle on 53.2 gr. for this bullet. By the time I got the loads done there was beginning to get quite a mirage out at 500 plus so I shot some groups at 300. I shot 3 three shot groups and they were all within 1/4 of an inch. I would say Garland did a good job on the build it is a dream to shoot. I forgot my phone but will take photos next time.

180's are pretty rare these days. Supposedly they are going to do another run soon. The 162gr Amax also has supposedly came off the suspend list. I've switched to Sierra stuff in my 7mm. I'm running the 168gr matchking which has a slightly lower bc at 565 but still respectable running 2794.

I love the 284. Mine shot great with H4831sc and did better than any other powders I tried.

Lets see some pictures of the gun.

look at the 160 Accubonds too. I really love them, not quite as sensitive

I would love to shoot the amax. I shoot 4831sc and 4350 in lots of stuff I didnt have any with me yesterday so 4350 won out. Here is a pic of the gun. It is sporting a 30 inch brux barrel.

This is the first gun that I have owned that I feel gives me instant feedback.(combo nf 15-55 scope and rifle) I know it is making me a better shooter. I left the range feeling I could shoot better next time.

The morning was nice early I was able to move out to 800. Getting some practice with some little wind changes but I think the load is solid.

Is this an 800 yard group? If so, that is THE load. Vertical stringing is what matters at distance and that doesnt have any. Awesome shooting!

Yea that is the 800 yrd group using 4350. I was happy with the vertical. I am working to push out a little further. I think when all is said and done I will be able to get the range right to 1000 without having to shoot over a canyon or something. I am forward to it cooling off a bit.

I'm betting he is somewhere around 3100fps.

eeks333 Wuuuuuut? A friend's 7 Rem Mag makes 2950 fps, that bullet, on a compressed load of Retumbo.

People are getting 2900 with 180's in long action long barrel 284. It's the current fav in f-class along with the big magnums in 7mm or 30 cal.

Re: 284 first results...success - 07/29/14 05:37 PM

My 26" 7 Rem Mag produces 2950 fps of a 180 Berger. Guess the 30" barrels make the difference. I aint gonna try to hunt with a heavy contour 30" barrel though. I'll just be happy with what I got. Sure does hit hard with that MV.

Re: 284 first results...success - 07/29/14 10:27 PM

The 30 inch barrel helps. it also quiets it down some. I am pushing 2875fps at the muzzle. perhaps not the hottest but I have a really good seal on the neck. I am not planning to hunt with this rifle unless a pig walks onto the range, however, I am planning a 338 lapua build and I think it will end up with a 30 inch barrel.

Re: 284 first results...success - 07/30/14 12:19 AM

Thats on the upper end of the velocity I expected. That's pretty dang salty for a 280. It sure is a great cartridge.

If I were to build a 338 LM it would be built to run at max power. Heavy 30" barrel and 300 gr Bergers. If youre gonna run a top fuel dragster run it right.

Re: 284 first results...success - 07/30/14 03:27 PM

That is exactly the plan

I sure figured you be a lot faster with the long action and long barrel. I get 2794 with 168 SMK out my 22" barreled 7mm-08AI. The higher velocity stuff usually is rl17 I think though.
