Is .45acp enough?

Is .45acp enough? - 07/07/14 12:49 AM
So I posted earlier about wanting a 10mm. The more I look st it, the options are limited(in my price range) and never having one makes me unsure. I'm just looking for it to kill hogs, possibly a very off chance of a small doe. I have such a love for the 1911 and don't wanna pay for a 10mm 1911... Is a 45acp enough for what I'm wanting or should I stick with the 10?

With the right bullet selection a 45 will kill a lot of things. Although my first choice would never be a handgun I have killed plenty of pigs with a 1911.

.45 ACP has been one shot stopping humans for over 100 years now so I would say yes.

I'm just thinking on ammo availability and of course my affection for 1911's
Shoot +p if you're worried about more power.

Buffalo Bore 255 Hardcast +P will do the trick.

+++++++++P and you'll be good to go with 45acp.

The 45 has been getting it done for long time.

Not to mention there is nothing better than a 1911.

I've been reading back and forth and so on about how the 10 is so much more capable out in the field. seen a few videos where guys hunt with them.. the only serious one was keith warren, he uses both the 10 and the 45. i really like the block 20 sf, its almost too big for my hand to feel comfortable with. but I'm sure if i shot it enough i would get used to it. the local gun shop here doesn't have any i can test shoot. hate wasting money and don't wanna buy it then never use it. thanks for all the input guys.

I had a Glock 21 for twelve years. I git my hands on a good 1911 and sold the Glock. The Glock's grip was just a bit too big for my hands. I could run it fine, but I can run a 1911 much better.
1911 is safer too. The reason is human error. A Glock is a safe pistol but the human holding it is not. At least the 1911 takes three actions to make it fire.

Not sure what your budget is, but if you decide to go with the 10mm, you can pick up the rock island tactical in 10 for under 600$, I believe. But never go wrong with a 1911 45!!

Re: Is .45acp enough? - 07/07/14 03:14 AM
The main thing is ballistics. A handgun is never going to be as powerful as a rifle will. Handguns are great backup firearms. They are not my first choice for hunting or anything really. With that said I am on the train of thought that a 9mm will work just as good as a 45 acp will. But there will always be people that will argue this to death. I have changed what handguns I have now to a few 1911s for various tasks and a few blocks in 9mm for various tasks. Each has their place but those are the two calibers that I am sticking with and do not feel any less safe carrying a 9mm versus anything else in the field or for ccw. Ymmv.

Well it wouldn't necessarily be my primary. I'd have it on my hip when I'm in the field, whether I had my rifle or not. I do think it would be cool to shoot some piggies with it but otherwise I dunno. Budget comfortably is about 600. Can get any glock for that. I'm afraid my wants would have me spending much more than that on a 1911

Get a .45 and if you want more power later you can get a .460 Rowland conversion kit.
And no, I don't have one, have never shot one, or even seen the ammo for sale in person but it seems like a cool idea.

If a Glock 20 SF already feels like it might be too big in your hands then that might become a larger problem down the road. From what I have heard the 10mm, while manageable has a pretty snappy recoil. I haven't shot one so I cannot confirm.
If it were me I would look for a Rock Island Armory Tactical. In fact I actually am looking to get one soon. Haha.

I tried the G20 twice..
I carry my 1911 out at our lease, it replaced my 44 (which admittedly is a better true hunting round). I carry 255g +P hardcast in it, it takes care of pigs or deer just fine.
I have ran both the Buffalo Bore and DoubleTap, my gun (DW Valor) cycles both fine and shoots them accurately.

I believe there is a colt 1911 in the classified right now for 650. That is a great price icing on the cake is that it is a 70 series if I recall right.
OR save up a little more and find a good STI or Springfield both can be had in the 800 price range.

Only if you want to be second best to a 45 in a 1911.

I've not had any issues with a .45 ACP vs. anything I've used it on.
Use the right tool for the job.

For the task mentioned above in my humble opinion the ever versatile 44 Magnum is taylor-made for such an application.

i completely agree that a wheel gun of that persuasion would be a great fit.. although I'm not a wheel gun fan. just my preference. I'm just stuck between what i like.. the 45 acp and the 10 which i know nothing about.

Re: Is .45acp enough? - 07/10/14 01:46 AM
I bet those who are not a fan of the most versatile handgun cartridge for a reloader ever made, the 44 Magnum have no experience with one either.

Re: Is .45acp enough? - 07/10/14 05:47 PM
I have owned several 44s, a 41 and 357
The 44 is a better hunting handgun but I dont like carrying one and I shoot a 1911 better
If I was in bear country a 45 ACP wouldnt be my first choice of course.
