ruger mini 30 - 01/24/14 01:44 PM

Would really like some opinions on this especially for a smaller lady east tx deer and pig popper/ tactical rifle. Seems basically about the same as a 30 30 with tactical capabilities

The cartridge works fine for hunting, try to stick with the 152 grain soft points for better results. The Ruger platform is not known for being very accurate in general.

People complain about accuracy just like they do with AKs. They're better than minute of kill zone. One of ly BIL hunts with one. The deer don't care if the rifle is sub moa or has larger groups. My old worn out $60 Mauser has larger groups and kills just as well as other rifles.

Terrible accuracy. So many better choices

What would be some better choices? Theres ar in what caliber? The 742 woodmaster but I dont think I can still get 10rd mags for it. Trying to build a tactical/womans hunting rifle. Really want lighter side and scopeable

What does tactical mean?

Does that mean semi auto?

I guess pump could work. Mostly I would say 10rd and above mags. I have a marlin 1894p awesome little rifle. If I could find a ruger deerfield my search would be over

Many of the accuracy complaints on the mini-30 are because of cheap Russian ammo. I am a big fan of 7.62X39 but I took it in a different direction when I built my 7.62X39 AR-15. I can hold 2-3" groups at 100 yards with 6X magnification and Russian ammo. Brass Winchester ammo is about 2". You can build an AR for about the same cost as the Mini.

AK is more accurate.

The reason why mini 30s accuracy sucks id the barrel was bored out to .308 not .311 that the mil surplus bullets have.

And anyonr who thinks AK accuracy sucks should take classes on shooting a rifle.

Re: ruger mini 30 - 01/25/14 03:59 PM

the newer mini 30 have thicker barrels and shoot much better than the older ones , and the little carine was never ment to be a target rifle, many folks myself include have compared it to their bolt deer guns my mini shoots as well as my marlin 30/30 inside a 100 yards. which is about rifle was made for. deer and pigs at that range don,t know the difference between a 3 inche group and 1/2 they just die

I still prefer an SKS for the 7.62x39. I've had a few and they all were pretty darned accurate with anything I fed them.

Re: ruger mini 30 - 01/25/14 06:12 PM

My mini 30 with Russian surplus ammo would outshoot my sks and my 94 Winchester. The mini14's had a bad rap because of their outsourced barrels being thin and not milled to exacting specs, ruger started making their own barrels though and the mini 30's are now just as accurate as any other comparable rifle. Most of the time it is operator malfunction, and not the fault of the rifle. Youtube is full of videos depicting their abilities.
