6.8 build up

6.8 build up - 12/30/13 01:46 AM

I built an A4 style 20" AR and have enjoyed shooting it. I want a 6.8 to go after hogs-
anybody built a 6.8 recently?

So far I'm thinking an 18 or 20" heavy barrel with an adjustable M4 style stock.
I'm going to move over a P-223 3x9 scope/M223 mount onto this and put the iron sights back on my .223/5.56 AR.

Looking at Bison, Stag, and PSA for the upper. COnflicted on the trigger-I have a Spike battle trigger with JP springs on the other AR that I like. Either that or a Rock River Arms 2 stage for this one.

Thats going to be heavy if you plan on carrying it at all. A lot of people seem to be going with a 14.5 or 16" pencil or lightweight profile for hunting rigs.

As for trigger, if jot stepping up to a Gisele then try an ALG trigger with JP springs. Pretty nice and affordable as well.

I wouldn't go longer than 16" for a 6.8, and you may re-think a heavy barrel for hunting - can get very daunting

I've got a 16" Lightweight Hunter profile 6.8 that is a breeze to carry, and I built it myself with a Wilson Barrel and Seekins Upper

There is no point in going past 16" for the 6.8 round ... Just extra weight

The ARP scout was a very balanced awesome weight at 16"

Although this linked 18" is interesting if it ever goes in stock.

My 6.8 pig gun has a 16" ARP scout and a Geissele SSA-E. I can't imagine a better setup for what it gets used for.

Disagree. There is a point but it's just not relevant to most people. Extra length will always yield extra velocity. Most people just consider the difference insignificant enough to still to shorter.

True. The yield in extra velocity compared to extra barrel length and weight is just less than a lot of other rifle calibers. This is because the round was specifically developed to be effective in a 16" barrel for a battle rifle. Test results I've seen show about 50-70 fps gain going from 16" to 18" in 6.8.

The round was actually designed for SBR use I believe ...

Yes, I guess I should have said short barrel rather than 16".

Going from 16-20" will give you at most 75fps That is not extremely helpful in most hunting situations. One the flipside the weight savings is huge, even more so if you do any stalking.
The 6.8 cartridge was designed for SBR type rifles of 14.5" or less. Handloading can gain you a little over factory ammo but IMHO not enough to justify going with aany barrel over 16"
