consolidation of inventory

consolidation of inventory - 11/09/13 05:34 PM

Well for the past 7-8 years I have had quite a few personal problems. As a result I had to sell off most of the guns I had spent a life time acquiring. Now that I am on the rebound I have bought a few guns but realizing that I do not have the time to work with them all,I am thinking of selling what I have. Then buying a select few so I can focus on load development, and such.
the cool part it is starting over and applying the knowledge gained through the years, the weird part is not have something that needs work.
Anybody else do this? was it a success?

At one time I had a pretty good collection built up. Then a life altering illness and retirement made me thin things way down. Several went to family members (they were going to inherit them when I kicked the bucket anyway)...sold a few...gave a few away to close friends and youth shooting programs. The few I have left will go to family one day...many times I wondered why I ever started to collect guns...after all a CF rifle, a shotgun, CF handgun, 22 rifle and 22 handgun are all I ever really needed...

Cause they're awesome.

I go back and forth on the subject. I keep thinking that I want to move to fewer, nicer rifles, but then I find another shooter that I want. Either way, will be good.

I have about $20,000 worth of guns and ammo at my parents house. We seem to be in a huge family battle, and I know my newphew has been shooting my ammo stash. I had 3 cases of 308 mostly good ammo there at the house, since I don't live anywhere near them and they are in the midst of a move I am pretty doubtful any of my ammunition will ever be returned to me.

I have put the word out that if any guns are missing I don't have a family anymore.

It is wonderful to have a very huge stash of guns, but life can really screw that up.

I had to do a two tours overseas before I retired from the military and instead of liquidating my guns I gave them to my parents for safe keeping. That was a mistake.

Be careful of accumulating a quantity of firearms, it may bight you in the [censored].

I've tried consolidating but I always change my mind

I have more tied up in guns than I do in vehicles. At least they hold their value better than vehicles. If I ever have to leave them with somebody, which I won't, but if I do, they'll all be locked up as they are now. Ammo stays locked up in a separate safe. Proper storage is worth spending the money on.

I agree with this. I sold a lot of my guns and now focus on the quality of items I have, rather than quantity. My girlfriend actually made me realize this when she asked me "why do you need so many guns when you can only shoot one at a time, focus on building up your ammo stockpile for the guns you already have." Made me think about things a little differently. Even when I find a GREAT deal I often pass unless it's already a round that I have inventory.

When you get a Grandson that loves to shoot, your inventory will dwindle.

Back in the 80's I had around 130 weapons. My xd neighbor had about 250, and he died with cancer unexpectedly and one son got hold of them and sold most. Mine went due a divorce, custody battle, and the business bust in the late '80s. I'd suggest you purchase guns that you will use that are well made and have value. Not whim purchases or just because you budget is short. You are better off with a $1000 rifle with a $800 scope than a closet full of $2-$400 cheap'o guns.

Well said Don.

I could get by with just .280, .223 or .222, .22 LR, and a couple of handguns and a shotgun. Just getting by is not my intent, though.

That being said, I've gotten rid of most of the cheap guns that I've bought myself in favor of much higher quality stuff. Same goes for optics, you definitely get what you pay for there.
