What rifle for my daughter? - 11/04/13 03:48 PM

I know this has been on here before, but I am looking for a new rifle for my 13 year old daughter. She is big for her age. I want to get her something differnt that will be hers. I have a couple of 243, 270, 30-06,and an ar that she has been shooting. She wants her own deer hunting rifle. What do yall suggest. I am leaning towards 25-06, 260, or 7mm08. Thanks.

I'd go with the 260, or 708. Pick your platform.

The overall gun length of the 260 and 7-08 will be shorter then tge 25-06

All three are great choices, don't think you can go wrong with any of them

what did she like?

A lightweight AR in 6.8 spc has the benefit of an adjustable stock and light shooting cartridge.

If she didn't "like" it, then my dad has a featherweight winchester model 70 in 243 that i REALLY like. But I'd think any 16-20 inch, lightish weight rifle in any cartridge based of 308 (308, 243, 7mm-08, 260 remington) (and I'd add 257 roberts in there too) will do nicely.

Personally I'd go with the .25/06 because they are pretty ballistically similar to the .257. ( I kinda like that cartridge :-) ) for my daughter but the. .260 or the 7mm08 are lights out cartridges as well but.......... It's not my gun. Find someone or someone( s ) who have those chamberings and let her shoot them and decide for herself, it will be hers after all
Didn't pay attention to where you are from but if you are local I'd let her shoot my. .25/06 to see how she likes it

She likes the car and shoots it well. She is wanting a gun she can call her own. I want to get a different caliber than what I have already. Between her and her brother they will get mine some day. I am leaning towards remington 700 in 25-06 or 7mm-08.

my buddies 12 year old daughter(avg size, slim girl) started with a .243. she shot a deer last year with her dads model 70 .270 so now that is "her" deer rifle.

at that age, it would depend on which rifle she liked better. if she is smaller stature go with a short action rifle like a browning micro or Winchester featherweight. if she is 5'6 or above a standard rifle is fine in an appropriate caliber

there really is no difference in killing power for deer between a .270/25-06/7mm-08/260

I really like the 7mm-08, I own a couple myself. I just shot my friends Winchester M70 featherweight in 7mm-08 the other day, awesome gun. The 7mm-08 is a soft shooter, the kick is not nearly as "sharp" as my .270. Don't get me wrong, the .270 isn't a bone crusher by any stretch, but it has a different feel IMHO.

12 years ago, when my daughter was 10 years old, I bought her a heavy barrel .243 "starter rifle." It was a good deal from a friend, so I figured I would give it a try. I thought the weight would be an issue, but Texas deer/hog hunting is "bench-rest hunting" while sitting in a blind.
She still hunts with this gun and has killed countless deer, hogs, and coyotes with it. She refuses to give it up for anything else.
I think the stability of the heavy gun that helps with less recoil is what made this work.
