Anyone else wax their rifle and shotgun stocks?

Anyone else wax their rifle and shotgun stocks? - 10/25/13 07:51 PM

As I do with my vehicles, I like to keep some wax on my rifle and shotgun stocks to help protect them from the elements. And as it does for furniture, a good coat of wax just helps bring out the luster of solid wood. The only wax that I have ever come across that's sold for the purpose is made by Birchwood Casey. Still, it has always done a good job and is easy to use.

johnson's paste wax on all
wood surfaces inside and out.
wax where metal and wood surfaces
meet to keep rain out. wood stock
external surfaces get several coats
each year.

Paste wax makes for a pretty good somewhat non slip surface also. Kinda like surfboards, not that we surf much here in Northeast Texas. LOL

Is that what they're calling it these days?

Liquid gold furniture polish. It's like pledge on steroids.

I wax, first it protects the finish, second it helps to keep the gun clean. The same with my wood game calls, I also wax them. Find one that has carnauba wax in it, I like he clear Trewax.

Stay away from automotive style waxes some have fine abrasives in them to remove oxidized paint. Not any good for fine Woodstock finishes, or furniture finishes.

I use birchwood casey too. Also use it on my leather knife sheaths.

A good rifle is like a good woman. Both should be treated with great care and attention.

I wax all mine, particularly those that go into storage in the safe. Main difference might be that I use Renaissance wax. Very good stuff.

I haven't waxed them but I've used lemon oil. It works pretty well.

Lemon oil might work best on older stocks with a weak finish. Not an expert for sure but I wonder if it would penetrate the finish on a newer gun. And I mention this with the thought that a gun stock should never be refinished to avoid a drop in its collector value.

Wax on the other hand is added on top of a well-finished stock to provide a layer of protection.

you can get a high luster shine on many wood stocks with polishing compound and elbow grease

I'm a fan of Briwax. I think it's a British product but easily found here in the states. It's a mix of Beeswax & Carnauba. Great product for bare wood or on top of any existing wood finish. Also in a pinch it makes a decent release agent for metal parts when you're bedding a stock.

Briwax is a real good wax, used by a lot of top end custom furniture makers.
