Cheap Truck gun...
I am considering getting an older 870 pump 12 gage, adding an extended mag, cutting the barrel down to 18 1/2", and putting a folding stock on it. Load every other round 00-buck, slug, 00-buck, slug, etc. Want to keep cost to $250-$300.
I already keep a pistol in the truck (either a 1911 .45 ACP or a Bersa Thunder .40 S&W
Thought and opinions?????

Why the 00-buck, slug pattern? Just curious.

Interesting thought. I saw one today, Sears 200 which is the Winchester 1200, barrel was cut short, pretty clean gun, wanted
$160.

Close range self-defense, how I loaded as a LEO...also works on hogs at closer range.

He does not know the need so he is stacking them.
I do the same thing with my AR for home and truck. Alternating AP and ballistic tip.

I was thinking about a coach gun for the same thing.

Me too at first, but decided not enough rounds. Don't figure I will ever need it (haven't so far), but if you do need it I want more than two rounds.
That's why the extended tube (mag) and additional rounds on the stock. Folding stock to keep it compact, yet able to extend for full stock stability for aim and control.
Sounds good. I would go all federal tactical buckshot. It stays tight. Maybe find a saddle or a way to hold a few slugs on the side

After having used folding stocks on a number of different shotguns over the years, I would -- if this were my gun -- keep the standard stock on it. I probably would not bother with throwing a mag extension on it, either.
IMO, that gun with either a small, slingable/shoulderable (I realize neither of those are words) bag of shells right beside it (a great option), or some sort of side saddle/butt saddle -- is just fine for the huge majority of us and the situations we would face.
And all that can be done, probably including the shells, within your budget....

Sounds like a plan!

Make sure whatever you get has a solid finish....I used to have a 1300 in the truck that started rusting through the bluing

Re: Cheap Truck gun... - 09/11/13 01:08 AM
Not worried about a little surface rust...if blued will probably strip and duracoat anyway. As a kick around truck gun don't really care what it looks like cosmetically, just as long as it functions reliably which is why I'm looking at a pump vs. auto.

Re: Cheap Truck gun... - 09/11/13 09:59 AM
I also wouldn't bother with cutting the barrel. You can find them used for around $100-150.
Also a folding stock can be a true pain to shoot with slugs or buck shot

Re: Cheap Truck gun... - 09/11/13 12:49 PM
I think you have a good idea. I like the way you stack rounds. I was trained the same way. However, I will parrot what a couple of others said about the folding stock. I have had two folding stocks on shotguns and really didn't like either one, and got rid of both. I realize you are probably trying to save space with a folder, but I wouldn't replace the original stock.

Re: Cheap Truck gun... - 09/11/13 10:13 PM
As this is NOT a hunting shotgun...or even an occasional shooter, would you still prefer the standard stock knowing the only time you plan to use it is the time you REALLY need it! I didn't figure space savings as much as easy access/egress from a vehicle is more important than comfort.
Your thoughts please.....
I'd take a standard stock over a pistol grip anyday. Ora wood stock cut a little shorter.

Re: Cheap Truck gun... - 09/11/13 11:22 PM
being a LEO you should already know what you want/need
but here's my opinion
truck gun: need to be able to maneuver in and out so
cutting barrel is good
cut the butt, too
in self defense you don't care about length of pull, you just
need to snug it and squeeze
you ever shot regular shots at close range ? they don't open.
so stuff whatever you want in the chamber
I like pistol grip but I realize it is another thing to
snag
whatever you decide on, post some pics to share

People (I'm not stating YOU) have the misconception that all that is necessary when shooting a shotgun at something is to point it in the general direction and pull the trigger -- the sky then turns black, fowl fall from the sky, etc. Umm, no.
If you require your gun for dealing with a threat or anything that you really want to hit, pistol grips suck, and shotgun folding stocks suck only marginally less. A solid stock you can put in your shoulder is the best option.
I've been working with long guns in and around confined spaces (including veh interiors) for a little over 30 years -- IMO, keep the normal stock, but there is nothing wrong shortening the LOP. Likewise, since you are considering an 870, a pistol grip isn't horrible -- although I personally see zero benefit to it....

what ever you decide on you will need to shoot and practice with to become proficient find what you want and practice taking it out and shouldering the gun once you nail down a TTP then practice more. practice doesn't make perfect but it does make permanent. perfect practice makes perfect

For your "close range" purpose, a 10/22 compact with a good bullet would be just as deadly, higher capacity, and easier to hit with.
Of course, if your not one who believes he can get the job done with an accurate 1400 FPS 40gr bullet, then you surely would choose your shotgun.
I haven't found anything yet that can continue aggression after being shot by a 22LR at 50 yards and under. Most times DRT to include Deer, Elk, Axis, Dogs, & Hogs

They make a telescoping stock for the 870 as well. Might be a good alternative and would work well should you get into a cqb situation where you need to search and clear with the weapon shouldered.

Re: Cheap Truck gun... - 09/13/13 12:09 AM
I have one just like you are describing. An old beat up 870 wingmaster with the barrel cut down to 18" and the wood stock cut down about an inch. Its real handy, and the action is as smooth as butter. I have an extended mag that I keep meaning to put on it, but haven't gotten around to it as of yet.

Not to threadjack, but isn't it illegal to kill deer and elk with a 22LR?

It's illegal to kill whitetails in the state of Texas with a rimfire. It's not illegal to kill exotics, as far as I know, which elk are in Texas. He also didn't specify what species of deer.

Fella's,
I understand your point. Nothing in the OP concerning pistol grip shotgun option led me to believe it was for hunting out of a truck.

I took it to mean a defense weapon with an occasional opportunity at pigs. At some point in our lives our reaction time, eyes, knees, shoulders and backs don't allow us to be as "ready" as we once were. For me open sights with a pistol in low light or night situations is much slower and difficult than just a few years ago. A shotgun gives you a little wiggle room and a whole lot more intimidation and stopping power.

This! Also carry a pistol .45acp or .40s&w with me in the truck.

I am a believer of the power of intimidation of the sound of a 12 ga pump chambering a round I have unseated a bicycle rider while on guard duty he flew off the bike and landed on his feet hands in the air at that point they only see the muzzle not the butt stock

Re: Cheap Truck gun... - 09/13/13 11:20 PM
I like a semi beat up ( well used) Ruger 77 in 25.06 to .270. That will bust just about anything you run across and the gun is dang near indestructible. Got one in a .257 roberts that likes to shoot yotes. Dang accurate too.
Okay my bad, this is a great ranch gun. I get the gist that you are looking for shotgun sorry.

I just picked up a Kel Tec Sub 2000 for a dedicated vehicle gun. Folds up nice and small, takes Glock 9mm magazines and is relatively cheap. 33 rounds of 9mm hollow points should take care of anything that needs taking care of in the car!

My opinion is that you already have a pistol, which is significantly more useful for close range self defense than any long gun in the close quarters of a vehicle cab.

If you have ever been in the dark or on the other side of door and heard that sound, It will put a hitch in your giddy up for sure!

Me too. I appreciate when an opposing party demos to me that they have zero tactical situational awareness (SA), and are only just now getting themselves prepared for the fight. Plus it is really cool that they tell me where they are, what type of gun they have, etc....

Most criminals probably wouldn't, either.
But since we don't know for sure the mindset of our opponent, I think it is unwise to gift them knowledge that we weren't ready for the fight from the onset, and now what we are bringing to the fight. No, I don't consider a shotgun -- including in a residence -- to be the most wonderful weapon to have for an upcoming fight.
But hey, to each their own. Although the only thing I find about as ridiculous as the concept of trying to scare someone with the racking sound of a shotgun is maybe adding the idea of holding a flashlight away from one's body, a la Hollyweird in the 70's....

IF I ever have to pull a shotgun (or any gun) on anyone, I'm perfectly fine with them knowing that:
1) I AM THERE!
2) I AM ARMED! and
3) I HAVE A BEAD ON THEM (otherwise, most likely they wouldn't know I'm there)
