Which choke for dove?

Which choke for dove? - 08/31/13 03:40 PM

This is the first year I've had the opportunity to hunt with a shotgun with chokes I can change out clap

I'm movin' on up!

Since I was a kid, it's always been shotguns will fixed, full chokes on them for dove.

I bought the 835 last year for duck, and it came with 3 choke tubes, an 'improved', 'modified', and 'X-Full'

I was using the modified on ducks, with good results.

But which would be the better choice for dove? I'm not really familiar with how different chokes would act with lead shot.

Depends if I'm at a waterhole and theyre really coming in good or I'm just in a flyway doing some pass shooting. Anywhere from improved with 8 shot to full with 6 shot..

Here's a good picture

Normally I run an IC in one barrel and mod in the other

Depends on the hunting. Like whether or not you're going to be pass shooting them. Generally speaking you should probably run a mod or IC as the others have suggested. In my 20 gauge I actually run a skeet choke most of the time and it works very well. I do however choose my shots carefully.

Shoot the improved. I kill doves to 40 yards with improved cyl.

Most people over choke themselves

Have an older Remington 1100 with skeet choke, seems to work OK where I hunt.

I've had my best luck with a skeet barrel. I was goofing around one day and shot at a crossing dove waaay out. Folded him on the first shot. I paced it off at 62 long steps. A single pellet hit it in the head. Just like I'd planned... aim

Skeet in my B-391 20ga works where we have hunted for years.
When sitting near the pond in Evening, Skeet works great.
As season goes I step to Lt Mod to Imp Mod.

I like the IC choice, unless they are longer shots or it is windy, then the mod.

Light Modified most of the time. If I'm close to water, IC.

Let a buddy borrow a gun a few years back and I "accidentally" left a turkey choke in it. Didn't work so great for him haha. I run improved cylinder-modified.

Well.. it depends on your hunting situation. A full choke is ideal for long, passing shots. An improved cylinder for close shots. A modified for everything. Any of the three chokes will allow you to consistently hunt doves.

Shot size and amount play a large factor in what choke should be used.

Skeet in the over, improved modified in the under...

Re: Which choke for dove? - 09/04/13 03:54 PM

I agree with most.....improved or modified. I have killed many, many doves with an improved at 40+ yards and have even killed several with a modified at 60+ yards all with a 28 or 20 gauge. Using a full choke on doves is dumb. If you are shooting a 12 gauge you definitely don't need anything over I.M.

That dove at 60+ yards... Did it have more than one hole in it?

Skeet & Improved in my Weatherby O/U

Skeet in my 11-87.

That's the beauty of interchangeable chokes, if they're close or far, you can adjust! up
