Five Seven - 08/11/13 09:18 PM

Anyone carry a fn five seven? Looking for a good plinker for carrying around the lease. Supposed to be very accurate and lightweight with very little recoil. I know the ammo is high dollar but other than that any cons? I've never put my hands on one so any feedback is appreciated.

I think there's one in the classifieds.

Re: Five Seven - 08/12/13 02:26 AM

It is a big gun and holds lots of ammo.

Very little recoil and pretty accurate.

Honestly, for a lease pistol I would go with a good 22 it would do everything a 5.7 would do. Even better would be a 10mm or 357.

Just my thoughts.

Im not sure I understand the price hike in them lately. They seem to have gone way up and not came down like most everything else. Ammo is absolutely retarded for them too. I was seriously considering one before the craziness set in but now Im not sure I would look at one again. I have also noticed the pmr 30s have gone way up in price too. The last one I saw was double msrp.

The 5.7 will flat out tear sh*t up! I've seen monster boars shot and dropped DRT on the spot with them. I've never seen a 22, even a 22 Mag, come close to the destruction a 5.7 does. It's a very accurate pistol, and we have shot it at 100 yards. It's very fast and I would not hesitate taking any game with it. I don't recall which bullet was used, but I think it was 40 grain. Also, it will not knock over a steel metal plate for competition.

This is rather an unusual post about the 5.7. you don't see them often. Someone posting who actually knows what they are talking about. The pistol and carbine work. To date I must have shot 40 or 50 pigs with my 5.7. the only gun I have with a better recovery rate is a 308 FNAR

Re: Five Seven - 08/14/13 03:38 AM

I had one gifted to me (pistol) and must say it's super accurate at 100yds. I've shot a cpl hogs with it, but they were canned hunts.

Re: Five Seven - 08/14/13 04:02 AM

These are my 5.7s. They are fun guns to shoot and accurate.

This is my 5.7 with the pistols I generally carry when hunting hogs.

Again, the 5.7 is a very large pistol. It holds 20 Rounds of ammo.

I have shoot 3 hogs with the 40 grain American Eagle round out of the 5.7. I did not think the results were great. All the hogs died but required tracking and follow up. The 5.7 is also an extremely loud gun.

I have killed hogs with my 17 HMR also, but that does not make it a hog gun.

I personally think the 5.7 is awkward to carry because of its size, loud and, is not a good choice for an all around lease gun.

It is a fun range gun and I do not plan on getting rid of mine but, it is not my 1st, 2nd or, 5th choice to take to the lease.

Like the 5.7, accurate and fun to shoot. Screwed up a few ears ago and didn't get a pistol for cheap but do have a PS-90. ammo now is about 50 cents a round when you can find it. the 5.7 is also a pain to reload.

look at the ballistics it is a 22 hornet in a different case, they are basically ballistic twins.

I would really appreciate more information on you two guys' experience hunting with the 5.7. Pistol or carbine? What kinds of ammo? Etc. P.M.'s or just more posts in this thread would be great!

I suspect the reason you had a bad experience shooting the hogs was most likely due to the American Eagle round you were using. It is a TMJ round that is much shorter in length than the typical hollow-point SS192/195 rounds. It won't tumble in flesh just poke right through. It doesn't expand much if at all either. If you were to ask me what would be the worst round to go hog hunting with, I would say the AE round. It's fine for target practice, but has rather poor terminal ballistics. SS197 (blue tip) with the V-Max frangible bullet would be much better and has done a serious number on many hogs.

Re: Five Seven - 08/14/13 01:44 PM

The American Eagle is the only ammo that I could find in the last year. The FNH ammo is just not out there.

Like I said I like the guns, heck my boy has shot several thousand rounds through the PS90 and at least that many rounds have gone down range from the pistol.

I have only shot 200 rounds of the FNH ammo. All of those rounds on paper. The pistol prefers the FNH ammo. Will flat shoot these into tiny little groups out to 50 yards. It shoots the AE ammo but it tends to shoot it low right. We adjusted the sights and now it is set up for it but the groups are not near the same.

The PS90 has never shoot the FNH loads, but seems to do fine with the AE ammo. Groups are small out 100 yards. Have not shoot it past 100 yards.

So my knowledge is based on killing stuff with the AE bullet. All hogs were shot at less than 20 yards, all shots were head shots. There was tracking involved in recovering each of the pigs. No DRT. They all were recovered within 100 yards but it was not an easy 100 yards. Two times the bullet passed through the brain but the hole on either side was tiny. There seemed to be no hydro shock. The 3rd was back to far but angled back into the neck. The bullet tumbled but not near enough to put the hog down. In all case the hogs were shot again with a 10mm.

All hogs were shot by my 12 year old son.

I love my 5.7 pistol.

No hogs where I hunt, but it will do a job on coyotes and other critters.

I hunt pigs with my 5.7 exactly like archers hunt them. I wait for the pig to give me a heart shot. I usually have a short trail, maybe 10 to 20 yds. If necessary I can put my dog down to find a longer trail. If I do my job that is never necessary.

I hunt over corn feeder. My average shot is 12 yards. I use the 27 gr no lead free bullet.

The explosion out the front of the pistol is awe inspiring. Lots of flash and lots of noise. The PS90 is not bad on the flash but still loud.

Still a fun gun to shoot, love to take it to the range with the big hearing protection. Never miss a trip to the range or, at least never misses a trip when we have ammo.

If you are actually hitting the pigs tiny brain, they shouldn't be running off anywhere I don't care what you shoot them with. BTW, are you using the pistol or carbine to hunt with?

Here is the size difference of the FNH 28gr HP bullet and the AE TMJ bullet.

As you can see, the AE bullet is not going to tumble consistently or at all. It may destabilize as it hits something hard, but certainly not ideally.

If you can get ahold of some Elite Ammunition ammo, that would be the best for hogs. I'm sure everybody has seen this video.

I have heard people say that with the right ammo, they have dropped big hogs as fast with their PS90 as they have with their .308's. It sounds unbelievable but that is what I've heard.

You are using the SS195. That bullet is miles beyond the AE 40gr TMJ with regards to terminal ballistics.

Are you using the pistol or the carbine?

Re: Five Seven - 08/14/13 05:33 PM

Pig brain is a tough shot. Heart shot is an easy shot if the pig is quartering away just a bit. if the near leg is forward you have an open target about the size of a medium orange

Chad have you stacked it against the 22TCM round? I've got one of those from RIA and a PMR-30 in 22WMR. There is a world of difference between 22TCM and 22WMR. I'd love to see an honest side by side comparison of 5.7 vs 22TCM myself.

The 22 TCM has the edge on the 5.7 in velocity but the bullets I have seen made for that platform have terrible wounding characteristics. I believe you would have an issue with penetration depth on body shots. I suspect it would work well on head shots though.

Re: Five Seven - 08/14/13 07:55 PM

I believe the 5.7 leaves a lot to be desired. It is bulky (just look at the magazine!) they are loud, ammo is high not to mention the gun is going to run you a thousand. You could buy four Ruger mark III's which would do you a whole lot better for the cost of one Five Seven. Now lets get to ammo.. It seems you already know the cost of Five Seven so why would you prefer it to .22? I mean Don't get me wrong, the 5.7 round has its place, but a ranch gun is not one of them. I would Look at a Ruger Mark III, if you don't want a .22 I would look for a 10mm or .357 Magnum.. But honestly a .22 is all you need.

I already have 22s. I was interested in the 5.7 because of the accuracy and low recoil. I also like to add a gun to the collection every now and then, that you don't see everyday. The only thing im hearing i dont like is how bulky it is. I need to put my hands on one for sure.

That is why we have horse races. I sure don't think the pistol/carbine is is for everyone for every one but the 5.7 absolutely belongs on my ranch. I can keep coons and 'Dillias out of the garden and yard and don't have to worry about ricochet. I have stopped a dozen beaver from digging dens in my damn. The 5.7 is most at home on the ranch. Earns it's living most respectably

I am not trying to sale anyone a 5.7 so if someone doesn't have a desire for one it is sure ok with me but to say there is no place on a ranch for the 5.7 is like saying there is no place on a ranch for a pickup truck

They are great guns but, they are very big, and very blocky. Like I have said 'love mine, no way I am getting rid of it' but cannot in good faith tell you it does not have issues.

Oooookkkkk Big and blocky.

It is the lightest of these three pistols. I carry it IWB with no problem. I carry it in a Kramer horse hide.

Carries much easier than a 1911?????

Out of curiosity I measured the shortest distance from the outside of the trigger to the closest place on the back of the grip. I think if you are interested in the FN you should try one in person. All of my sigs, p220, p226, p220 had a greater reach distance to the trigger (74mm) than the FN (73mm). My Glock G37 had 73mm reach. All my 1911 had greater reach than the FN
