Gun Safe Questions - 01/06/13 03:53 AM

I could use some insight from you folks. I'm looking to get a big safe and I have no idea how to get one delivered. Are there folks in the north Dallas(Aubrey, Frisco) that you could recommend? What's a fair price from what you have seen?

Depends on what you're looking for in a big safe. If mainly fire protection and a decent kid/neighbor proof locking, you can find those under $1k and movable with a group of guys.

If you're looking to go all out, name your price and get a bunker. I have heard of 2 guys on here that'll move safes for you. (the right way, with multiple good feedback) Their names escape me atm

Buy 1 size bigger than what you want, I promise you will fill it up and want bigger. Or at least I did.
As far as moving the safe, I have a 48 gun safe that i can move by myself. Not fun but possible. I use golf balls to roll the safe around. Makes it super easy and very mobil that way.
You could also use short pieces of pipe.

There are several companies that will deliver safes. Cannot remember the name not but one is a locksmith in Richardson. The safe companies around town also offer the service.

Most will charge around $175 and up depending on weight of the safe and distance.

They are on sale at Academy right now and I went with the Canon 48 gun wide body. Academy uses a moving company that is wanting to charge $310 to deliver to the spot of my choice on the first floor. I may be out of line but that seemed pretty steep for a 700 pound safe. If anyone can recall a movers name I would appreciate it.

That seems steep but like everything else that may be in line with others

Just for forum posterity, I found Mike Ohler with Lonestar Safe and Vault. Great guy and great service. Beat the brakes off the Academy delivery crew on price as well.

I just got a 36 gun Sentry (same dimensions as some other brand 48 gun safes). List weight was 615 pounds.

I went to the local furniture store and borrowed their dolly that had a ratchet strap that went around it like they use for refridgerators. Myself, dad and 15 year old son were able to get it in the house. Used a 4 wheeler trailer to get it home after they loaded it for us at the store.

Academy had them clearanced and I got a good deal.

Txguy02 is right on. Buy bigger than what you need. Hopefully you will be able to acquire more and more toys. I have out grown my safe and never thought it would happen. Dont know if they are in business but I bought a Granite safe from Rays Hardware off Singleton years ago. They are made in Ft. Worth, very well made and came with a warranty if it was damaged in a brake in it would be fixed or replaced for free. Good luck!

Been very happy with Liberty, just sold my old one and upgraded to a bigger one. Buy big, treat it like an investment.

Definitely get one that seems bigger than necessary. When you buy one billed as a 24-gun safe it will hold 24 guns, all right---unscoped ones. It'll probably hold 12 to 15 scoped rifles comfortably.

You and 3 buddies should be able to move it. It took 4 people to move my safe down from the truck bed and 2 to move it when on the ground.

Just an update, I bought a much larger than needed 48 gun Canon safe. Of course momma has a good chunk of real estate set aside for papers and responsible adult stuff. I am tickled pink with the Canon. Mike and his whiz bang trailer made the move easy. 150 bucks is an amazing deal compared to Academy's crew. I recommend him with complete confidence. Now to fill it! Mike Ohlert. 972-351-9500.

I bought the cannon 48 wide body 2 weekends ago.It took 4 of us to unload it out of the truck, and get it where it was going in the house.I think they over shot the weight on this thing.

Guys, Im a welder...Id like to make 1 point.

The majority of safes sold at box stores are made in china of thin 1/8 - 3/16" steel. I can get past any of those with an axe in just a matter of a few minutes.

Dont be fooled by the thickness of a safe door, most of that is empty space where the lock is located. When shopping for a safe, tell the sales guy/girl, you want 1/4" on the shell and 3/8" on the door. Try to park the safe so that thieves cant get to the sides, such as in a closet.

BTW....box store safes use...are you ready for this....DRYWALL to insulate the safe box for fire resistance. IF you dont believe me, ask the company reps! DRYWALL !! It should be fiberglass matts.

IF all you want is a "STRONGBOX" contact your local welder, I can build a strongbox for a lot less and use much better material. I would imagine, that I could build a strongbox out of 3/8" for cheaper than a box stores "safe" made out of 1/16 or 11 gauge. Put 3 or 4 good round MASTER locks on it, and that is a massive defender of goodies.
