Looking for a Gunsmith

Looking for a Gunsmith - 01/02/13 01:38 AM

My son shot some bad shells in his Remington 887 12 ga. and caused the barrel to swell at the end, cracking the Black Armour coating as well. I was wondering if there are any close to the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area that could cut the barrel down 4-4 1/2", retap the barrel to accept the Rem Chokes? Remington wants almost as much for the barrel as the gun cost!!! If anyone knows of anyone please LMK. Thanks

You are talking about almost $250 worth of work. How much is a new Rem barrel?

You could buy a pipe cutter and do it yourself sans the refit of the tapping.

I think a large part of your consideration should pertain to how your son uses the shotgun. If it's for waterfowl, goose, turkey, etc. then one might argue that the performance of the gun will be greatly affected by removing 4 1/2" of the barrel. It might be worth it to buy the new barrel. Good luck.
