Lapping Ring Question

Ok, so I splurged a bit a bought an unnecessary present for myself with my Discover cashback rewards. I got a Wheeler scope mounting kit, complete with FAT wrench and lapping.

So i busted it out this weekend to put on 2 sets of Talley rings, one on a 700 30-06 and another on a Savage 243.
I watched the video and I'm fairly certain I followed the procedure for lapping pretty well. My only real question is how long was I suppose to do it?

I did like video said and tighten the rings just enough to where the lapping tool moves but it difficult. And I didn't count, but i oved the tool around and back to forth for a good few minutes, about 4-5 minutes I suppose. And I tightened the screws just a bit in the middle of the process. Afterwards, there was only a small amount of high spots rubbed donwn. Not nearly the amount as shown on the video. Should I have done it more?
My main fear was over doing it.

Being cautious when lapping rings the first couple of times is a good thing. I used a couple of sets of rings I was planning to throw away as practice before attempting to do a good set.
After you get the hang of it it isn't hard to do correctly.
If you over do it (which is rare) a little material can be removed between the contact points where the upper and lower rings meet.


Everything appears to be faster and easier on an instructional video.

You had good rings to start with, I've done about 10 sets and some have had little removed, some had quite a bit

Part of it will be how aligned the rings are when mounted to the action, just need to look at the rings and see where the rubbing is occurring, be easier to tell you if you post pictures

you will get feedback "never used don't need to"thats just showing how ignorant some people are. like the above post said "you had a good set of rings to start" is correct, if world record holders use this method it can't be wrong. I check every set up on each rifle
