Leupold Mark 4 rings/base help needed.

Leupold Mark 4 rings/base help needed. - 10/17/12 02:56 AM

I have been shooting my .300 Ultra mag in Sendero for over 5 years now. I finally dropped the $$ and picked up a Mark 4 8.5x25x50 (for a heck of a deal). The scope came with ultra high rings and they seem to by way to tall for my needs. I need some help on picking out a good base and rings for this scope.

Pic of scope just sitting on my .204 and my Sendero in the front. BTW if anyone needs Leupold tall rings I have some for sale or trade if you have shorter ones.

Thanks! I guess I will be going with the 20moa base. Just can't decided if I should go with the one piece of two piece.

one piece is better leupold makes the 15 moa base in the twist in they call them the long range.just so u know i tried 3 mark 4 scopes and sent them back 3 times in less than a year.they would not hold or track they do have the clearest glass to me i dont own them any longer have some older leupold that i love

With you putting it on 300 RUM and its recoil i would go with a better steel one piece 20moa base and steel rings. like warne, badger or ect..

if your looking to save alittle you could go with TPS steel rings and mounts. heard at one time they were making mark 4 rings for leupold.

I think any of the suggestions would be fine that people have mentioned.

The Mark 4 rings would be good, and so would the PRW rings (and cost $100 less that Mark 4).

Other companies make good rings too.

Matt made a good suggestion.

My personal preference is Seekins (link). Link for the base. & here's a Link to their rings.

Now in order to determine the proper ring height, Measure the outside diameter of your scope's objective, then divide by that by two.

Super Sniper 10x42 has an O.D. of 50mm. 50/2=25mm (.98")

This will be the dimension above which the ring and bases combined will need to raise the scope's centerline to clear a barrel that is the same diameter as the action..

Once you have that key dimension, all you need to do is select a base and ring combination that equals that dimension plus 3mm-5mm to accommodate lens covers.

25mm+3mm=28mm (1.10")

Figure out how thick the base is. IE: Badger Ordnance Remington 700 base is 7mm thick.

28mm-7mm=21mm (.82")

Now you need rings which will take up the rest of the dimension. This is where you need to pay attention because this is where most of the confusion and inconsistencies come from. Manufacturer's ring heights are not uniform from brand to brand, IE: Burris' low is not the same as Leupold's low. Ignore their descriptions and go by the actual measurement of the ring. The actual measurement of "ring height" is determined two different ways. Some measure from the top of the base (where the ring contacts it) to the centerline of the ring (Fig. A). Others measure from the top of the base to where the ring first contacts the scope (Fig. B). If the brand you are considering measures their ring height like Fig. B, you will need to add 12.7mm for one inch scope and 15mm for 30mm scopes to get to the centerline of the ring which is also the center line of the scope.

Badger Ordnance provides both measurements. For the example Super Sniper on a Remington 700 we need a ring with a height of .82". Badger Ordnance stock number 30680 measures .823" so these are the ring we would select.

Now the Seekins 20 MOA base is 9.81mm thick.

So kind of thinking badger 20moa base and badger standard rings. Never thought this would be such a hard decision. Lol
