I don't want him to be disappointed in a few months when the thing malfunctions. I've never had a good mossberg gun, ever. I'd just rather stay away from them, and was trying to help him.
OK we have changed out the scope twice now , tried 150 gr & 165,180 in winchester & remington , 2 different persons on the sled on the range and the best group was 4"
Terrible & disappointed and called Academy today and they said they will ship it for free to mossberg for it to be fixed or replaced
Only thing I will get from mossberg is a shotgun. Even then I like remington for a cheap shotgun. Best bet is to upgrade alittle even 100$ more will get you a little better gun

Anyone else had problems with the ATR 30-06 ?
Sorry to hear that. I work at Academy and unfortunately this happens all to often with Mossberg bolt actions. It also might help if you put a better scope on the gun. I don't want to sound like a DB or anything but a $99 scope on a 30-06 ain't gonna cut it. At the very least, on a gun with that much recoil, I would get a Nikon Prostaff.
Excellent choice with the Remington, you are going to like it a lot better. There are some on here that don't like the X-Mark trigger, however I am not one of them.
I've got the same rifle, just have a Leupold VariX-IIc mounted rather than the Pentax. I really enjoy it, especially in .308. Soft-shooting, ~1 MOA accuracy, and it's smooth once you break it in.
