Finally got burned by optics planet...

Finally got burned by optics planet... - 08/17/12 04:33 PM

Well, I bought a DNZ game reaper mount for my Savage 270 and the mount wouldn't hold the scope tight. I tightened it up more the next time out because I figured I didn't torque it enough. Still wouldn't hold tight, and tightened it up as much as I could and then I realized the mount wasn't tight to the receiver as well. I emailed DNZ about my problem and asked them what might be wrong with the mount. After emailing him asking if I might have put the screws in wrong, (Long ones in the front, short ones in the back) DNZ emails me back and says that their mount come with only ONE size screw.

At this point, I email optics planet to ask for a return. I get no reply. DNZ says they will mail me a set of screws for free and they are on their way. I decide that should be fine. I will take the screws out and put the right ones in and hopefully it fixes the issues. I try to take the hex screws out of the rings and I destroy my allen wrench and stripped the screws while trying to get them out. Now I have a $750 Vortex PST scope in a mount that won't hold zero and I can't get it out. It also has a small gash in it from the first time out shooting because it rubbed on the mount. I tried to use an EZ out to take the screws out but the screws must be made of some type of supermetal as it destroyed my bit and ez out.

I still can't get a hold of optics planet. DNZ said that the mount I have was probably a return and either the person returned it with the wrong screws or Optics Planet put the wrong screws in the package when they shipped it to me. According to DNZ all their mounts come with one size hex screw and I definitely have 3 different sizes.

Well, you've damaged it, so now it's gonna be a problem. I have returned several things to OP but it does take them some time to reply. Drill out the screws, get new ones from DNZ, and be very careful not to damage your scope.

Several drops of car brake fluid might help you get those screws loose.

I will try. I really don't know how the heck I'm going to get these screws out though. My ryobi screw extractor is destroyed from trying to get the dang things out.

No offense, but sometimes a professional is cheaper.

If you intend to try and save your mount, take it to a gunsmith
that's setup to remove the screws, or you will ruin it and possibly make it very difficult to save the mounts..Screws are
harder than most over the counter drills will work on and it is
almost impossible to drill out a mount screw with a hand held drill...Depends on costs and what you wish to spend..Don

I only use DNZ mounts. They only need 22inlbs to hold any scope on any rifle. I have a custom Model 70 in 450 Marlin with a Burris 2x50mm fixed and it hasn't moved since I had the new mount installed 6 yrs ago.

I refuse to buy anything from Optics Planet or Able Ammo, they both suck in the CS department!

Hey Ryan - my name is Alessandro and I work at OpticsPlanet. I'm sorry to hear about your experience and frustration. I can't say what happened for sure, but I'd like to get a supervisor on this case. Can you PM me your order number so I can have them look into it and contact you for resolution?

Once again, I'm really sorry about the situation with the screws, and I definitely want to have this looked into to make sure we don't drop the ball like this again.

I can send the order number but I already had the screws drilled out of this and the mount is scratched up pretty bad and doesn't look good period. Are you guys willing to take a mount back like that for return? If so I will gladly send it back.

Honestly though, it would have been nice to not have to deal with this in the first place. It also would have been nice if my $750 Vortex didn't have a gash in it from the mount not holding.

It is too late now, but next time try Skylar at SWFA - Phone Number: (972) SCOPE-IT (972-726-7348.)

Great folks, great customer service and great prices.

If you're asking if we'd normally take the mount back, the answer is no. But this isn't a normal case. Send me the order number and I'll do everything I can to make it good.

I'm really sorry it came to this. I definitely want the customer service department to look into what happened too.

This is one of many threads I've seen in regards to Optics Planet. Most if not all with negative input.
I've only dealt with them on two occasions, but my orders were handled quickly and accurately.
I'll be watching to see if this is resolved satisfactorily for the OP before placing another order.

I would like to let everyone know that Optics Planet has fixed the situation and gone above and beyond what I expected from them. I did not expect to see them fix it but I was dead wrong. This has definitely restored my faith in Optics Planet.

They refunded the price of the mount. They also offered to replace it at cost or any other mount I decide I want.
