.22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/01/12 07:07 PM

If you were restricted to, two, .22 caliber handguns. 1 semi-auto. 1 double action revolver, which would you choose, and why.

Thanks fellas.

I have a buckmark .22 with the heavy barrel that has been a great gun, but since I dont do shooting competitions anymore, I never shoot it... wanna buy it?

No comment on the revolver. My dad did pass along a S&W Model 41 to me and it's been the most accurate 22 auto I've shot.

Believe it or not I've got at least 5k rounds through my 9 shot Taurus 22lr revolver and its never failed.

And semi auto, I love everything about the Ruger Mark series EXCEPT the wretched disassembly..

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/02/12 01:31 AM

Ruger 22/45 Mk II, target comp if you can find one. The assembly on the 22/45 is way way easier.
Smith Wesson 63 4" pre-lock

The semi might be a little tough, I've got a Model 41 S&W but the little Rugers are hard to beat.

My absolute favorite 22 revolver is my old S&W K-22 but you can just about bet the farm theres a well used Ruger Single Six sitting in my safe some where.

Y'all are awesome. Thank you. I'm seriously looking at the Ruger 22-45 lite, but keep hearing the disassembly process is a nightmare.

Having said that, also going to take a close look at the Smith M317 & 617.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/02/12 01:15 PM

I would get the Ruger Mark 2, with like a heavier 4" threaded barrel

As for the revolver, one of those Taurus with a long barrel (preferable 5" or longer) and has a capacity of 9 shots.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/02/12 01:42 PM

I have had the little sig and it was a pos. That being said a friend of mine has had one with zero issue. My new Ruger sr22 has been money. Eats all the ammo that I have tried and fun to shoot. Good luck with your quest.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/02/12 01:55 PM

I would not worry about Ruger 22/45 disassembly. Unless shooting in competitions, don't have to clean it after each range trip.
Clean it 3-4 times per year works for me.

I love my Hi-Standard Sport King (has the changeable barrels, one heavy target, one standard) and it is OLD. My best friend has the .22/45 and it's a tackdriver a well.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/02/12 03:50 PM

Colt Woodsman or High Standard Supermatic Citation for semi.
Colt Diamondback for or S&W K-22 Masterpiece for revolver.

I like older guns.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/02/12 05:10 PM

The Mark series Rugers are easy to take down and reassemble once you understand the mechanism. They're great pistols.

The S&W Model 17 is a great revolver and is hard to beat! The 18 is a great revolver also but a little scarce.

Another vote for Browning Buckmark.

S&W 617 because it is a joy to shoot

S&W MP-15 22 Pistol because everyone wants to shoot it when you take it to the range...

Dang Nathan I want one of those revolvers. How accurate is it?

Posted By: Nathan Nelson

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/03/12 03:24 AM

Very Very Accurate... When clean it will shoot 1 inch groups at 25 yards with just about anything you put in it.

I killed a Prairie Dog with it at 110 yards with CCI mini mags...

One of my favorite guns.

Dang Nathan, I wanna come over to your house and play. Glad to hear that 617 is so accurate. That's another one I've got my sights set on.

Revolver, I'd probably get an older Smith & Wesson.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/04/12 05:17 PM

I have had several Ruger Mk 512's. Stupidly accurate. Point in the general direction of the target and it stacks em on top of each other. We have a hand me down from wife's Dad, a Ruger RST I with the 4 5/8 barrel I think, The short one with fixed sights. Fun gun.
I have had a Ruger Super Single Six Stainless since 197o's. One of the first New Models when they changed to a transfer bar.
Parents bought that for me one Christmas. Love it, wish it was 5.5 instead of 6.5" barrel. I have both cylinders, 22/22mag.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/05/12 12:28 PM

Ruger Military Match bull barrel....stupidly accurate, even when you put on a B-Square mount and red dot.
This one replaced my "Ruger Luger" original Mark with tapered barrel when some bastage stole it.

Limited on revolver experience to an old antique HighStandard 9 shot revolver but it was a shooter.

Looked at a bunch of different .22's over the weekend. Both in s/a and revolver.

Now leaning towards the Ruger SP101. 8 shot capacity. 4 inch barrel.

Semi-auto...Colt Woodsman
D/a revolver...H & R Sportsman 999

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/06/12 07:25 PM

For older pistols I like the Woodsman and Diamondback. Newer I'd have to go with the Smith 617 10 shot and a Buckmark with threaded barrel. 22 semis are too fun not to shoot suppressed.

However, the Ruger govt model is the most accurate 22 I've ever had. A lot of modern semis have horrible triggers. I also tend to favor the muzzle heavy feel of 6" revolvers, but can see the advantage of a 4" if you carry it.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/06/12 07:53 PM

I would stop at two .22 for all-round shooting at a "High Standard H-D Military" with a 6 3/4 brl & a "Single Action"(not double) Ruger or Colt or simular.

Just picked up a beretta neos 6" semi auto 22lr for my wife. Not a single FTF/FTL used winchester white box, federal, fiocchi, and cci ammo. Under $300 at a gun show NIB with 2 clips. S&W makes a 22a model that is cheaper/similar but I didn't care for the sights on it.

Good luck!

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/09/12 03:50 AM

I have the Ruger 22/45 target with 5 1/2" heavy barrel, very accurate and doesn't seem to care what ammo brand you shoot through it. I can't recall it ever hanging up. Trigger could be a little crisper, but for what I do with it, it's great.

only revolver info I can offer is high standard and h & r, all 9 shot double actions, fun to shoot

I have a beretta u22 neos which is ugly as sin but pretty fun to shoot

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/10/12 06:59 PM

You do not state what purpose the guns will serve? Big difference between camping/trail/plinker and target shooting and hip pocket snake killer. You mention the newer SP101. I have one and I am a Ruger fan, but I think it has a lousy trigger. I have a H&R which is much much cheaper, American made, and IMHO is probably as good a shooter.

I can't stop buying .22 pistols. Went to Jackson Armory on Friday and couldn't help myself; walked out with 2 more. I will try to take some pics of my Woodsmans, High Standard, and Browning Medalist. You just can't beat the finish quality, accuracy, and craftsmanship in these older guns.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/12/12 12:01 PM

Ruger MK II, and only experience I have with DA 22 revolvers is an H&R, and a S&W, and I do not care for the trigger pull on the S&W.

Re: .22 handgun lovers. Need your input please - 08/12/12 10:13 PM

If money was no object I would say probably a Smith and Wesson 41, for a more cost efficient semi I would say the Ruger 512 as well. For the revolver there is no doubt what I would go with... A Smith and Wesson 34, well unless you wanted a full-size then I would say the 17 as long as it is a older Smith. But then again I may be a bit one sided as I only have old Smith revolvers besides 1 new one.
