7-08 for truck gun

Short action and can get a 18-24" barrel with little effect

If you want a really handy truck gun look at an encore, 5"s shorter just due to action being missing, and safer

Nothing wrong with the calibers, but I'm a Remington person and it's my nature to lean that way on rifle purchases.

I like the .270 but BOBO makes a good point with the short action etc... just less movement

Got to admit, I'm a 7-08 fan.

I like short action rifles (.243, .7mm-08, .308) even though I do have a couple of long ones too.

One of my favorite truck guns is a Remington 788 in 7mm-08 with 18.5 inch harrel. Makes for a handy gun in either the truck or a blind. That is also my main goto gun for as of this fall 30 years.

Just looked at the ballistic data for both using a 130g bullet and the difference is not worth talking about.
from the truck the short action would be best. That's from a 270 fan.

Either or. I like them both, but good point about a short action. .270 ammo is easier to find for factory stuff though.

Prefer short action rifles myself.. though I have a couple of long actions too to fill in gaps.

What BOBO said......7mm-08. Short Action.

The short action is not much shorter than the long, only thing that would make the difference is barrel length to be able to swing around. I don't like the 7-08 do would opt for a 270.

The 7mm-08 can get away with a shorter barrel and maintain velocity. So, for a truck gun it's a no-brainer.

Take a .270, cut the barrel down 4" which causes you to lose ~120 FPS, and you're pretty much replicated a 7mm-08.

As mentioned, 7MM-08. Also, you have chosen a wonderful platform in the Browning line. You will LOVE it. Browning R-O-C-K-S! Browning is what Remington dreams of being when it grows up.

I own a Browning X-bolt in 7MM-08 and it is one of my favorite rifles. My friend (Altez) just shot & killed a 175lb. boar with it this past weekend. 1 shot dropped him on the spot.

Only reason you might want to look at the 270 over the 7mm-08 is ammo availability. I know you can buy 270 anywhere not sure about 7mm-08.

I have both and like both. Kick is the only difference to me.

708 makes more sense for a truck gun but I am a sucker for the old 270.

Re: 270 vs 7mm08 - 05/13/12 12:43 AM

308 and .243 make more sense to me. The difference between 7mm-08, .243, and 308 are exagerated. Its a lot easier and cheaper to get .243 and 308 rounds. . . . . but you should always get what you want.

The nice thing about the 308, you can get a 16" barel. it isn't ideal, but try finding 270 barrel with 16"

If I needed a truck gun, I kind of like the cz 527 7.62x39.

Re: 270 vs 7mm08 - 05/13/12 02:30 AM

Like someone else mentioned....243 or .308 make a little more sense for a compact truck gun. For hogs and deer .308, if going to be used on coyotes >50% of the time get a .243. I have at least one of all 4 calibers. The 7-08 is a dandy deer rifle, but for ammo availability and cost a .308 would have suited me better. To me a .270 in my longer, heavier Remington is best suited as a deer stand rifle...not that's it's limited to that, just in that gun it isn't light and handy...

If you plan to reload go with the 7-08 if not go with the 270. But I have both and both are great...... just get one of each
