Good all-around shotgun - 11/16/11 02:20 PM
I'm looking for a good quality shotgun at a decent price for ducks, geese, doves, pheasants, etc. Any suggestions on make/model/gauge?

Can't go wrong with the 870 express mag. shoots up to 3 inch shells.

Beretta Urika 2. Replaced all my other shotguns.
I would say a semi if you're into sport shooting (sporting clays, skeet, etc.). I'm am a firm disbeliever in the 3 1/2" shell. But then again the only game on that list I don't hunt is geese.

Benelli Nova and it's right in the same price range as a 870 when they go on sale. Quality brand.

870 Express, you can find used ones for $200-$250. They are no frills pump that can take a beating and go bang every time.

While I would strongly recommend the Remington 870, I would also strongly advise against getting the Express model. Express means express made, so the quality is not near as high as some of their other models. I have an Express, and having used other models such as the Wingmaster, I can safely say that the Express does not even come close to the Wingmaster in terms of fit and finish, and overall quality. For this very reason, I am currently trying to get rid of my Express and replace it with a Wingmaster. My vote goes to the Wingmaster.
I have also heard great things about the Benelli Nova, but sadly I have never used or handled one, so I can't comment on it.

Most folks will over gun when buying shotguns and ammo..Get a
weapon that fits you, and your budget. If you intend to hunt
doves and quail, don't purchase rino roller ammo....it will blow
the patterns and your shoulders...Most competition Skeet Shooters
shoot 20ga in 12 ga events, and their best scores when first starting are usually in the 28 ga....You can usually find a good
O/U at around $700-800 used in a Browning...All of them will wear
if used a lot, and require regular maint....DD
Benelli Nova 12 guage pump. Great quality and good price. Will last forever.

I'm with TGO. The Beretta 390 is the best shotgun I own... Closely followed by a Browning B-80. Both are very similar, very reliable, and very versatile.
