help choosing a .357 revolver - 09/14/11 08:56 PM
I have decided to get a .357 revolver with a 3" or so barrel but would like to keep the price around $300-350. I am selling a winchester 1300 to cover some of the cost. what makes/models does everyone recommend that would be in my price range? I've seen Ruger/Taurus/Rossi/EAA all come in around that price but i dont know much about the reliability of those companies revolvers.

Of the ones you mentioned I would go with Taurus only because I dont think you will get a Ruger GP100 for that price range. Taurus makes a pretty good revolver but I personly dont care for thier simi-autos.

Of the mentioned makers, I'd save a little more cash up and buy the Ruger any day of the week.

Ruger all the way. A used Security Six can be had in that price range if you look around, or pay a little more and get a 3" SP101.

Rossi makes a six shot 357 with a 3inch barrel NIB in your price range. It's not a Smith or a Ruger but it works.

Might be able to find a SP101 for $350. I think I saw one on another forum as a matter of fact... I'm a S&W guy myself. But the Ruger's are good. Can definitely find a Service Six, Security Six, or Speed Six in that range. Can't go wrong with any of those, in my opinion.

+1 on a used Ruger SP101 (can be had for a few more bones than your range...but well worth it). Built like a tank and will handle full loads all day (if you can). .38s are a joy to shoot with it, too! Don't get me wrong...S&W are butter but just out of the price range you mentioned.
If you're willing to settle for .38 only (and 4"), used S&W Model 64s can be had within your price range. I have one and i love it, too.

The Ruger SP101 or S&W M&P 360 3" (scarce)
I know they are more than your price range but I still believe you get what you pay for with the only exception being a blued ONLY Bersa thunder 380 or 22.

Rugers are good, the Smith&Wesson's are, IMO better. But they will cost more. In any of them, check the ammo requirements. There are some defensive rounds out there, that may punish you, with a 3" barrel.
Good luck
