Scope Mount Issues :Maxed Out Windage - 09/13/11 11:37 PM
have been having some issues with my Remington 700 with my Leupold VX-II 3X9X40 scope. I'll try to summarize everything that has happened and get your opinions.
I've had this setup for 3 years and had been "dead on" for 3 yrs. (Or so I thought) The end of last year, I missed a bobcat from 100 yds broadside and didn't think anything of it, In May I missed another hog broadside 75 yds and knew something was up at that point.
Early June: I shot around 20 rounds and initially didn't hit paper. I clicked my windage dial unitl it maxed out and my POI (Point of Impact) ended up 5-6 inches "RIGHT" from POA (Point of Aim). I was no longer able to make any more adjustments and stuck with a gun that was shooting 5 inches to the right. All my groups were 1 inch MOA, and allowed plenty of time for barrel to cool.
June: Decided it was the Leupolds fault and sended it in. They replaced the windage knobs and corrected the issue on their end.
July: Tried bore sighting it and I couldn't get it to correct it self again. I then was fed up with it and took it to a GunSmith. He tried bore sighting it and Leveling it out on a gun vice. He was 6 inches to the right also and recommended me send it in again (this time with a written letter from him stating exactly the MOA, POA, POI, etc....
Late August: Got the scope back and sent it back to the gun smith. He was able to get it "close" in the shop and decided to take it out to the range to fine tune things. He maxed out AGAIN!!! this time 4 inches to the right (better but not perfect)
Today: Today I go to pick up the gun and he tells me to send it back again or either try returning it to Academy and getting another brand. I forgot that Academy takes things back so easily so I went that option. No questions asked, I exchanged it for a Zeiss Conquest 3X9X40 even though I bought the Leupold 3 yrs ago. Way to go Academy! I thought all was good....
This afternoon: I went back to the gun shop after work and stuck around to make sure the bore sighting issue would be corrected. I was furious as I saw him clicking and clicking. I thought it was Leupolds fault all along, but its obviously something else.
The only other two options are that my scope rings got bent, or that the pre-drilled holes from Remington were slightly off to begin with.
He ordered some better scope rings and we are trying that option first. I am worried that it is the holes that are not aligned properly though!! I figured I would have caught this problem alot sooner if it was that though? How easy is it to bend scope rings? I figured they would be pretty sturdy? I have been dealing with this issue since June and gun season will sneak up on me before you know it!
Are there any scope bases or rings that have windage adjustements? I'm furious as I continue to throw money into this gun and still no answers!
Sorry for the rant, but maybe this will help others in the future. I have googled and found that Remington 700 models are not "UNCOMMON" to have actually had the holes NOT drilled properly. Who knows!
Opinions Welcomed.
