Dpms anyone ? - 04/23/11 08:48 PM

Thinking of getting another AR15.
Anyone had any problems with DPMS ?
This is a lower end unit for about $ 700.

Yes Ive seen lots of problems with them. Not saying they are going to blow up in your face but there are far better options in that price range...

I would go with a Spikes for that price.

You could have a much better rifle for 200 more.

Im sure thier dependability is good enough for most of us on here. It not like we are getting in any gun fights or anything with them.

Ive owned several, no problems here. There 308's are really good.

They aren't top of the line by any means, but for most shooters will be fine.

Here is more info/ mythbusting on them

I have a a couple of ARs, one of them being a DPMS. The problem I have is that my DPMS requires a very wet BCG. Unless its soaked in lube, it doesnt like to run properly. However Ive had other ARs that will run bone dry

I have come across more problems with DPMS and Bushmaster than all others. I recently replaced a DPMS bolt carrier that was causing premature ring wear. I have seen some DPMS that were good guns but there are much better guns for the money.

The DPMS 308s are a total different beast that their AR15 brother ! The 308s are great quality.

Here are a few things I have seen problems with on the DPMS AR 15s. Maybe some of the guys whos rifles these problems belonged to can chime in.

Improper or no staking on the key.
Missing gas rings.
Misaligned gas block.
Mismatched feed ramps.

Now, these are all pretty simple fixes but when I buy something I dont want to immediately start having to fix things. Sure there are DPMS rifles out there that will run fine and be accurate, these are just some of the problems Ive seem with DPMS. Not to mention their are several other options with better quality parts for the same or less money.

Again, Im not trying to rile up anyone who owns a DPMS by any means and your may be a fine product but a question was asked and I gave my experiences... up

My lower frame is a DPMS but the pieces inside it are from Model-1 and so is the upper. I have shot about a 1000 rounds with no problems. But since my parts are not DPMS I guess I really did help answer your question.

Brandon may be on to something. Ever since Randy Luth retired from DPMS the quality may have gone down. He was the brains behind the AP-4 which was the Golden Bullet Firearm of the year for 2006. Luth was a behind the scenes guy in the three gun competions. If he's seen no staking of the carrier key this is a major and elementary mistake.
