Hog Hunting With A Shotgun

Hog Hunting With A Shotgun - 04/05/11 02:44 AM

I have a buddy that wants to go hog hunting with a 12 gauge and use slugs. He has a couple of unrifled guns with a variety of chokes, but he's not sure how well that would work and what would be the best choke to use.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Shots will be anywhere from 25-75 yards.

There are rifled slug barrels available for mossbergs on walmarts website. I bought one and it was holding a twelve inch group with the crappy bushnell it came with at 100 yards which I found the reteicle loose after I my shoulder could not take anymore. Punches a nice hole in a hog with ease. Too much fun!

Most manufactures don't recomend shooting slugs through anything tighter than Modified choke. I use them in my 18" I/c with pretty good results even at 50yds, but I have ghost ring sights instead of a plain bead.

If he is shooting closer 000 or 00 Buck is your friend.

All depends on the slug and the gun.

I had a Nova SP with ghost rings that from the prone with Remington reduced recoil would five-for-five headshot a whole box at 100 yards on a DPS silhouette, and body shots were easy.

Other shotguns, not so much. Have him buy a box or two of several brands, i'd never shoot anything more than IC or Modified.

He doesn't have any rings or scopes, just a bead. Sounds like 00 might be the way to go.

With buckshot shotguns are sometimes picky on what they like, #1 buck through 000 wil work but it is best to know what it patterns best.

Killed quite a few with 00 from an 18" barrel at 10-25y

00 buck or 000 buck gives you some room for error.
They will definitely do the job.
I have used Remington and Winchester slugs with success also.

I shoot 000 through my full choke. Patterns well. Smoked a deer 2 seasons ago, dropped him right in his tracks. Would be fine for a hog.

If he is shooting a semi-auto, or pump, gun have him load a slug in the chamber, and then buck-shot in the magazine tube.. He will have plenty of time to take aim on the first shot, then after that first shot and they are running, then the buck-shot will improve his chances of hitting those running targets..

Truth be known we could all get by with a shotgun for most of our hunting needs. A bird barrel and a scoped slug barrel.

This would be my advice as well. Good call.

I killed 2 confirmed and shot 2 others during dove season with field loads. Of course at 15 yards a 12 gauge will take down a lot of things regardless of shot size.
