Its a smokin little round. I had one in a Ruger M77 and it was a good gun.

Getting harder to find ammo on the shelf.

I agree the 220 is better; but I would get a 22-250 instead

I have all the "common" fast .22's; 22-250, 220 Swift, and 223WSSM. My swift is custom, 26.5" shilen barrel with a .256 tight neck, milled square, hand lapped bolt and a Jewel trigger. I love it. If you live any where near DFW, SA, Houston, or Austin ammo on the self is not a big deal as long as you know to skip Wal-mart.
I hand load fot mine and I have owned several over the years. I love this round and I will probably keep this one "forever".

Love my Swift!

Only dislike is the rimmed cartridge took a bit to make sure loaded magazine correctly unlike my 250 where it didn't matter, but it is smoking throwing 53gr tsx at 4000ft per second!

I usually hate being that "my caliber is better than yours" guy, but I can't resist.

The 220 swift is still a speciality round in my books based on the Wally world criteria. I have a 22-250 and the round selection is better if you're not a reloader. While there is a huge performance difference between a 223 and 220, there is nothing noticeable between the 220 and 22-250. As for accuracy, my 26" savage is literally a tack driver at 200 yards. Well, I suppose the better terms is tack buster since I like to shoot the tacks off the paper when I leave. And one thing the 22-250 has in its advatage is for some reason it is not very sensitive to different laods. Why is this true, I have no clue. But I've tested it out on my gun and I can shoot any factory load at worst at sub moa. The load I settled on shoots .25" at 100 yards. you don't have to believe me, I've read articles in gun magazines praising the caliber for this ability. I have shot a 220 swift and thought it was very cool, but even the owner complained some laods were just completely incompatable.

Just something to consider.

With that said, I don't think you can really go wrong with a well tuned 220 swift. My 22-250 is my most recent rifle and definitely shoot that more than any other. I used to be a big hater of super fast 22 centerfires. Now I feel like a total @$$ for thinking that way and not owning one sooner. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

Re: Any reviews on the 220 swift? - 01/26/11 03:46 PM

If you are going the custom route and a reloader I would suggest a faster twist barrel in the 1:8 range for heavier bullets like the 75gr Swift Sirocco or Hornady A-Max. or even one more notch up the 80gr match bullets.

The 220 swift is fast and has a long history, the 223WSSM is faster and has 12.5% more case volume than the swift. One problem with it may be the ammo availability in the furure.
Another is action availability

I just picked up a nice ruger target/varmint in 220 swift and I'm excited about getting to try it out!

Be carefull of that fast of twist in the swift unless you plan to never shoot 45-50 gr bullets. They will over rpm and disinigrate about 15 ft from the muzzle. 1-9 or 1-10 would be a great. If your going custom I would be glad to answer any questions. If you're planning to go for an off the shelf version of the swift both the Ruger and Remmingtons are great.

Re: Any reviews on the 220 swift? - 01/27/11 04:32 AM

it's easier to find .22-250 ammo than the swift, I do love the swift, once saw a buddy of mine shoot a nice buck on a sendero on our lease off the hood of my pickup at over 500 yards, long way, took a while to get there but it was there right where he said it was. that sold me on the .220 swift. I still prefer the .22-250 though, kill so many hogs with it every week. no recoil, dont really need anything more for hogs and coyotes.

A plain 22-250 is pretty dang fast, feeds better than the rimmed Swift case, is easier to find ammunition for and many say it requires more case trimming if you reload.

If you reload, a 22-250AI will be even closer to the Swift. Swift is fast and all, no doubt, but it comes at some cost..

BMD, Would you get another Swift or a 22-250 or AI if you could do it over?

I have a Ruger Varmit 220 and it shoots Hornady VX 40gr factory like a tack driver. Killed plenty of deer, hogs and yotes with it. I love the speed @ 4200fps is sweet.

Plenty of horsepower there & no rim! Going fast twist? 7 or 8?

Haven't yet made up my mind on that...Chit don't even have the donor yet!

Not in a big hurry as of right now, since I have a 6.5-06AI, .300H&H and a .404 Jeffery all in the works.

Karnis called next, on whatever comes up in my shop. Hoping it is a Salvage! rofl

The swift rocks. I have Remington BDL w/ heavy barrel. There are some good factory rounds you can buy that still have some decent fps. I've seen Remington rounds and Hornady. The Hornady Vmax are awsome. Killer groups at 200 yards. I have yet to shoot the Remingtons.
