300 Whisper or 300 AAC Blackout

300 Whisper or 300 AAC Blackout - 01/20/11 02:25 AM

Does anyone have one or the other? If so I would like to pick your brain a little and get some input. I want to convert one of my AR's but I am having trouble finding brass for either round, which worries me alot.

Had a friend with a whisper, to my recolection all his brass was fire-formed. No purchase.

You can purchase it but it's going to run you over $40 for a box of 20. 300 aac is a little cheaper. Personally I'd leave those rounds alone and go with something like a good 'ol commie 7.62x39 if you want a .30 round. Those aforementioned rounds have very low energy (like handgun cartridge energy).

Sorry, should have been more clear. I'm looking for the best sub-sonic AR round that will use my bolt group and mags.

.300 AAC, plain and clear.

Reason = AAC is Involved in the Freadom Group which owns Remington as well, they want this to suceed, so Remington is making factory ammo and brass it just hasnt hit civillian side. Last Time we heard Remington/AAC was fulling a Gov Contract and where very close to full schedule release. I know right now they have several platforms in the works.

Remington is going to be making ammo for the .300 Blackout, not sure if it's out or if they will release the ammo

I have a 300 Whisper but you might be better off with 300 AAC. One thing is it has thicker neck diameter which means forming cases from .223 brass does not require neck turning like on Whisper. Hopefully also there won't be different case length chambers like there are for Whisper and its variants 300-221 and 300 Fireball. I bought a barrel that was sold as 300 Fireball (licensing issues) but was made to Whisper specs. If it is a Fireball chamber you will trim cases to 1.35" versus 1.40" for Whisper.

Either way you will most likely be forming your own cases from .223 brass.

Here's some 300 Whisper ammo, just finished loading them. If you don't reload, I would not pick either of these calibers. For subsonics you do want your own loads to maximize velocity and also energy. These are loaded with 200gr Speer HotCor bullets.

I ordered the blackout barrel today. Should be fun! Thanks for all the input.

if anyone has any 300blk questions, this is the man to ask...
Rob Silvers is the driving force behind this caliber release.

X2. I don't reload but I would figure but when you figure in all the time associated with forming brass and loading .300 whisper, I doubt you could do it for the price of the .300 AAC Blackout Remington is realeasing. So my vote is still .300 AAC Blackout.

Also if you ever want a bolt action and have a SA Remingotn 700 laying around AAC sells the 700 barrels as well.

Might be ugly but its quite, my fav part is 13 seconds in where the bolt being manipulated is louder than the muzzle report and round going down range.

I bet. Reloading or buying? I'm still waiting on my suppressor tax stamp. Once I do, let's go shooting and compare performance.
