How hard is the wind blowing. Have confirmed kills on jackrabbits to 250yds. The wind with that small of a pill is your enemy.

theres no difference in all 17 gr 17hmr ammo, its all v max bullets all produced at cci, different head stamp and packaging for different sellers.
the 20 gr is a different bullet
and 200 yds is no problem for the hummer

there is currently 5 different bullets for the 17 hmr

17 gr v max
17 gr hp
20 gr xtp
20 gr fmj
and 15.5 ntx (lead free)

Quote:
CCI, Federal, Winchester, Remington and Hornady all loaded here at CCI in Lewiston, Idaho with a V-max bullet are identical, with the exception of tip color. Manufactured on the same equip, to the same ballistic specs, using the same components other than color of the tip of the bullets. Obviously the shellcase 'head stamp' and packaging would be different on the various products.

the ntx and xtp are both hornady bullets as well as the vmax so all should be loaded in the same place was just giving him more options because all expand and react differently

whats an xtp and what 17 gr do you think leaves rabbits more intact

Re: .17hmr range - 01/14/11 01:45 AM

if you want intact you want the xtp or fmj the tnt hollow point will tear them up the v max is pretty violent up close so if under 75 yards i would go for a head shot the xtp is basically a soft point that has a full jacket but a flat exposed nose

Re: .17hmr range - 01/14/11 01:49 AM

the xtp is a controlled expansion bullet designed for small game hunting, rather than a frangible varmint bullet like the 17 grain V-Max bullet.

Last weekend of deer season I Called in my first varmint with my fox pro. It happened to be a wild housecat. The 17gr vmax didn't even exit at 35yards. Really suprised me!

You should see the how much the Hornady 17 gr. XTP expands. Badass. I am now trying the 20 gr. XTP. So far, I've two missfires in the same box. I still have another 20 rounds to go. The 20 gr. does drop a little bit but not significantly. It does make larger expansion than the 17 gr. Awsome. Oh, those missfired rounds did fire the second go around.

Question
about my savage bull barrel 17 HMR
It has stopped grouping at 100 yards It will shoot about 2 inches.. I have clean and cleaned this gun and still no group…. I’m using the 17 gr v max Hornady… guess I need to change ammo…
