Sako or Weatherby? - 01/13/11 12:31 AM

Been reading all the other debates.

And no, I don't mean Vanguards either.

Both great guns but I have always put Sako a little higher on the ladder than Weatherby.

vanguard/howa is a clone of the older sako action. sako and mark v are both outstanding rifles. i would put steyr in the mix as well.

Back to the two you mention I would go with the Weatherby. Sakos are nice but I like to minimize the probability of issues encountered in the field. Sakos being clip fed, sooner or later there will be an issue that is not as probable with a box magazine. You can drop, bend, forget or not properly seat a clip very easily. Box mag is pretty fool proof. You may hunt for years and never have these issues but with a clip fed rifle the chance is always there.

I have two Sako classics (30-06, 7mm), and the make a awesome weapon. I have never encountered any problems as the previous post stated.

Both are very nice rifles can't go wrong either way.

The Sakos I have had were not clip fed, but hinged floorplate like in the Mauser 98 or remmy 700 BDL. Think you are refering to Tikka T3s, with the .

Fot the OP, it would depend pn the caliber to me, if going Westherby round then Weatherby MKV others calibers Sako. Both are fine rifles

The last rifle I built was on a Sako action but it was chambered in 257 Weatherby. It was built by ML Knowlton.

I've never owned a Weatherby but the older Sako's are excellent weapons. I would never hesitate to purchase one. I'm not talking about the A7 which is a Sako 85/Tikka T3 hybrid. Not that its not an excellent weapon, I just have no experience with them. 2cents

SAKO of course, no question about it. Not a big fan of the A7 though.

I am biased to Weatherby but you are talking about 2 of the best rifle made it would be a hard choice but either way is a winner.

I have an a7 and I love it... it might be the ugliest sako ever made but it'll shoot just as straight as the rest, and hit where I put it

I'm not too picky! I'll take either one!

I have a sako 85 classic in 25-06, and it's a great shooter.

the weatherby rifles are nice, but I didn't want the black/stainless, and that high gloss finish on the wood stock markV just looks like [censored] in my opinion.

Sako doesn't also market all this "sub - moa" BS... their rifles just shoot.

Their both good rifles, to me it came down to the way the sako felt in my hands. They put a palm swell on one side of the stock that gives it a great feel when you handle it. The finish of the rifle is good, and the wood quality and finish is also very good.

That's what they are well known for, excellent ergonomics. When I got my first 75 Hunter in my hands, I knew I had to have it. Other rifles on the shelf just didn't compare in how that Sako felt in your hand. Didn't hurt it shot excellent but for a hunting rifle I do value reliability and fit&feel over tiny differences in accuracy.
