How to sight in a rifle at 50 yards?? - 11/30/10 01:38 AM

I'm needing to sight in my rifle on Wednesday and only have a place that is 50 yards long to do it safely. I think you can sight in a rifle for 100 or 200 yard shots...using only a 50 yard range. Is that right?

If so, can someone give me a step-by-step process how to do it? I would really appreciate it!

I have two guns I would like to sight in:

1) a Remington 700, 30-06 rifle. Shooting Remington Core-Lokt 150 grain bullets.

2) a Remington 700, .243 youth rifle. Shooting Remington Core-Lokt 100 grain bullets.

I have a lead sled to keep it steady and reduce recoil. Thanks in advance for your help!

I only have a 50 yard target at my place I always just shoot it till its an inch high and usually at 100 its dead on.

I will second the 1 inch high for 100 yds. Is this your first time to shoot these guns? (new scope, new guns)????

No, not first time...I have shot these guns every year. They are about 3 years old. They were both sighted in last year, but I just want to make sure they were still sighted in. thx

O.K I wasn't sure, since you asked for detailed directions. Good luck and hope you get them where you want them.

Sight them both in at 25 yards and they will be close to dead on. Most standard caliber guns are close to the same at 100yds as they are at 25yds.

My ballistics program shows that a 150gr Core-Lokt in 30-06 should be sighted in -0.18 at 50 yards for a 100 yard zero. +0.72 at 50 for a 200 yard zero. You could also sight in +1.09 at 50 yards for a 230 yard zero, max point blank range for deer would be 270 yards.

I can't disagree with anything said above. Just remember, the rules-of-thumb given are approximate. Skitini's answer is probably more precise, but even ballistics tables are only theoretical. Lots of wacky things can happen to a bullet once it gets downrange. The only way to know for sure is to shoot it at the desired distance.

Based on my past experience Skitini's numbers should be very reliable. I've hunted with Core-Lokts almost exclusively for 18 yrs. They are cheap, accurate and do a fine job. I would feel confident using those numbers.

I personally like my rifles sighted more toward the 200-250 yd range. Takes alot of the gueswork and heat of the moment mistakes out of those 300 yd shots that ocasionally have to be made. And at 100 yds. your only about 2-3 inches high.

That may be right, or may be way off. A major effect is how high above the bore the scope is mounted.

Not the rifles he has, but to illustrate--zero in a scoped AR-15 (which typically use xtra high rings) at 25 yds, and you will likely hit 5-6" high at 100yds.
