Marlin 30-30

Marlin 30-30 - 11/01/10 01:25 PM

I want to get different sights for my marlin 336. I have a cheap scope on it now, but I either want to get a good scope or go to open sights... maybe a peep sight? any thoughts?

Peep sights are good. Easy to install, too.

I put a set of Williams Fire sights on mine.

Depends upon the conditions / range where you'll be doing your shooting. Stand hunting, especially at ranges at or above 100 yds, I'd go for a better scope. I've got a mid-level Simmons on mine, and like it a lot. If your shooting is going to be primarily short range on hogs & deer in heavy cover, you'd probably be happiest with an Aimpoint sight (very pricey, but nice), a good red dot, or a Williams peep. Whatever is best suited to your own uses, preferences, and budget. We all have our favorites, and we all know they're the best.

tall mounts will let you use a scope and open sights.

Some folks swear by them, but they just never did it for me. Seemed like they made settling into a good sight picture on the scope kind of awkward, and limited my field of view while using open sights. But they're sure worth a try for someone who's so inclined. Might just be the bee's knees for them.

I had them and hated them. They made the scope way too high to shoot consistantly. If your scope breaks just take it off.

Same here, I just couldnt get into them. Marlins look pretty sharp with a good scope mounted on them close to the barrel too.

Make sure you get mounts that are high enough that you can still let the hammer down safely... highly suggest good hammer spur also

Also I have the 3-9x40 Bushell Fullfield II on it and the ballistic reticle works very well with the Leveraction ammo

Initally I wanted the see through rings, but have heard too many bad things about them. guess I have two options, 3-9x40 mounted low or open sights. whichever i end up using will determine when/where this gun is carried over the other. right now i don't have an avaliable scope, so for now i'm going to try open sights. let me know if you have any other recommendations for open sights, peep hole, etc.

I have a bunch of Marlins and I want them all to be sighted the same so that no matter which one I pick up as I go through the back door, they shoulder and shoot the same.

My eyes don't hold the open or peep sights in low light so I have, on each rifle, the Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 mounted with Weaver Medium Quad Lock rings on a Weaver 63B base. This combo is as if made for a Marlin and MidwayUSA offers the ring/base package.

The little Bushnell scope has impressed me, I have been using them now for over a decade and have thousands of shots downrange from everything 22 Short through the 450 Marlin. The compact scope centers on the receiver well keeping the rifle balanced where it should be, at the lever pivot point. That makes hand carry at the receiver very comfortable.

Here is the scope on a special run 1894S, chambered in 45 Colt, with a 16 1/4" ported barrel. A beautiful rifle for hunting the thorn thickets of South Texas. The 45 Colt with a cast bullet in a Marlin is impressive!

Same setup on a 336-44 Texan. This rifle was offered in the early to mid '60s. The 336RC chambered in 44 Mag. This is not the current 1894 but the full frame rifle. Still balanced.

My 1894 line up, all scoped the same...

Yeap, I'm a Marlin nut but also a Bushnell nut. Been shooting them since 1968 and I shoot them a lot. I'm in the business.

Ranch Dog,
I have a Marlin 30AS 30-30 and recently put a 4X scope on it. For me the scope sits too far back and I can't move it forward. I have a Weaver 1 piece base and Weaver rings. Any suggestions?

TG,

There might be a chance that the base is mounted backward. This is a crappy picture but this is how the base should fit. It should extend forward of the receiver and the aft end should be about 3/4" forward of the aft edge of the receiver. If it is backward, it will extend too far aft.

Not all bases are the same. Make sure it is a Weaver, many others use the same nomenclature. Make sure it is a "B". The straight 63 base is long.

I just got a 336 today and went to Cabelas and got their scope that is specific to a 30/30. Cost me $100 for the scope.
