Help with modifying my 7STW

Help with modifying my 7STW - 10/31/10 07:06 PM

I have a remington 700 sendero sf in 7stw with a leoupold 6.5-20. I have been shooting it a while now with good results but I would like to do a few modifications to it. First, the trigger is way too heavy. What would be a good aftermarket trigger for this gun (1.5 pounds or so)? Also, the stock is about 2in long for me. Would it be a good idea to have a gunsmith cut the stock down or would it be better to just find a aftermarket stock that fits better?

Timney trigger, have a smith cut down the stock for you.

1.5 lbs is VERY light for a hunting trigger IMHO, that borders on "hair" trigger. 2.5 lbs is plenty light for a hunting trigger IMHO.

Factory trigger is fine have smith take it down to two and half or three, order McMillan stock, if it won't shoot then u prolly flinching from recoil, add a break or buy one that kicks less.

Rifle shoots great, just trying to make it more user-friendly. As it is now I have to concentrate on trigger pull while fighting the long stock. Is it a good idea to have the factory trigger tuned down or would it be better to just get an aftermarket?

If it is the old style which im guessing it is being an stw a smith can get it down to a very nice user friendly weight. I recently bought a drop in Timney 1.5 lbs. and have tightened up my groups. You could do good with a 2lb. Aftermarket took about 10 minutes with simple tools.

Stock - Mcmillan or HS precision, I would get measured, 2" sounds like alot.

Your existing Remmy trigger can be taken to 1 pound safely by somone that knows what they are doing. It would be easier and much better on your pocketbook to just cut the existing stock to your length.

i would look into selling your current stock and using the funds towards a new one. 2" is a lot to be taken off - thats less than most youth LOP.

Got to messing with the gun, looked up how to adjust the trigger. Very easy process on my gun, got the pull to where I want it. Not sure on the actual pull as I have no scale, but it is somwhere between "Oops" and "Grrrr". Zero creep and very crisp. As for the stock, I overestimated in my 2in. It ended up being a matter of eye relief when on 20X. I just moved the scope back 3/8" in the rings. Should be good enough now. I need to start reloading for it as it is getting very hard to find factory ammo that shoots well (rifle likes TB bearclaw). What all would I need to start reloading?

Check the reloading section. I made a post in there once and I had about 3 people PM me and offer me the chance to go to their house and explain things to me in detail. Nice fellas.

also do some hard & fast bolt cycles with the safety off to see if it trips your trigger to be safe.

I slammed the bolt several times, bumped the saftey on and off, tried to squeeze the trigger while on "safe", and bumped the butt of the gun on the floor trying to get it to fail. Only way I could make the firing pin drop was saftey off and pull the trigger.
