Gun found in safe ???? - 10/27/10 01:47 AM

Found a rifle in a safe at my Aunts. The only marking on it is 7x57. Have never seen anything like it. What is it?

Sounds like some sort of Mauser.

No I don't. She told me it was custom built. Looks like any normal bolt action rifle, just no caliber marking that I am used to seeing. It is in great shape. It is up in PA along with a few others I will be getting. I like odd calibers, so I also found a 257 roberts.

Definetly a mauser action. A ton of custom rifles were built on these actions.

If it's got "7X57" stamped on it then it's probably a 7mmX57mm (AKA: 7mm Mauser). Great deer caliber.

7x57 is the caliber as LandPirate stated. It's more than likely a K98 Mauser action and maybe the barrel used on a custom build.

Me to!

A lot of the older fellas will tell you when they came out with the 7MM08 all they did was reinvent the 7x57. So that might give you a little insight to the caliber and it's capabilities.

While it is true it is most likely a Mauser based gun... it's not definitely a Mauser, without seeing it or knowing it... There were other companies that made 7x57 guns...
