.223 Ammo - 03/14/07 06:06 PM

What's up the .223 Winchester White Box ammo. I've been to 4 different places now and everyone is out.
Someone must be expecting and invasion or something

It's a long long way from my place to Cabelas. I've been to Gander Mt., two different Academy's and one of the local gun shops.
I'll keep looking.

I have been looking for the same stuff since December.
Have not seen it at the Mesquite Academy in a long time.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/14/07 07:06 PM

What's special about the white box? Cheaper?

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/14/07 09:06 PM

I don't know for sure, but I think they are like 6 bucks a box.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/14/07 10:43 PM

Nothing to special about the white box other than it is very inexpensive and my gun can shoot 3/4" or less groups with it.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/15/07 01:45 AM

I was told that winchester is shipping all .223 ammo to Iraq (anyway most of it) I had been shooting the 45grain ammo (winchester) and getting fantastic groups, then ater the war started, I couldn't find it, academy carried it in a 40rd bx (I think it was 40rds) kept looking for it and then asked a dealer at a gun show and I was told about all the ammo going to the war.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/15/07 03:19 AM

I never thought of that colt...I mean I knew that's what the M-16, or whatever the standard gun those guys shoot, uses.

I wonder if reloading these might make sense now.

If you are in the Ft. Worth area, go to "Cheaper than Dirt" on 820 North, they had a bunch of .223 & 5.56x45 ammo!

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/16/07 09:53 AM

I haven't reloaded for several years, I was at a gun store a few months ago, the owner does a lot of reloading and told me that you save 56% on reloads.

5.56 mm ball
not sure if it is fmj or not. I don't think so.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/21/07 07:49 PM

5.56 M855 62 Grain (Nato) Green Tip. Several others but that it the standard i believe.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/27/07 03:53 AM

I think you're right, Cruz. The M855 (SS109) Green Tip is the standard Nato 'steel penetrator' round.

Military ammo (or the civilian equivalent) has been getting harder to find, for sure. The same thing goes for components like primers. I bought some Green Tips a couple of months ago, and I noticed that within 2 weeks the price had gone up almost $40 per 1000. Probably due to the war, the recent U.N. rules against international sale of ammo, and maybe a little hoarding going on by folks who see the Democrats coming and don't want to get caught short like they did in the Komrade Clinton days. I know my supplies are deeper than they were a year ago.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/27/07 05:32 PM

I found Monarch .223 FMJ @ Acadamy this morning for $6.88/20rds. Cheaper Than Dirt here in Ft. Worth does not have the Wichester 'white box' ammo. The only place I have seen ir recently was in Graham at Wally-World.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/27/07 06:58 PM

They have never caught up with the severe shortage from 2004

U.S. Cranks Up Ammo Output
Chicago Tribune
February 8, 2005
"Production of 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm rounds will jump to 1.8 billion rounds this year from 400 million in 1999. Most of those will be made by Alliant Techsystems at the Lake City arsenal, where many of the 465 buildings used in production were mothballed after the Vietnam War. Up to 500 million rounds of the 1.8 billion will be made by other manufacturers, and the contracts are expected to be awarded in June."

Gulfcoast Ammunition has Wolf for about $200 per thousand rounds including taxes and shipping. not a "great" price but about the only place in the country that has any bulk ammo.

Re: .223 Ammo - 03/29/07 02:54 AM

Went to Academy tonight and they had some Monarch 223 mis priced at 4.89 a box. When I got to the checkout counter it rang up at over $8, but they said they would honor the price they had posted, so I bought 100 rounds.... looking back now I should have bought all they had.

Thanks Jason but I won't be going up this weekend. My Daughter In Law is having some surgery tomorrow and we're swamped at work so I'll probably be working all weekend.
After the storms up there last night I just hope none of our stuff got blown away

Re: .223 Ammo - 04/08/07 12:25 AM

I was in Gander Mountain today and they had gotten in some 200 round bulk packs of Remington 45 grain jacketed hollow points for $89.95 so I bought one of them. I hope they shoot.
