o/u question

o/u question - 09/19/10 03:47 PM

so i bought a yildiz over and under.. had a couple of questions about chokes. ive always shot mod in any dove and quail gun ive owned. but now that i have the option for a second i wanted some general opinions. i know if they are high and staying there then go with a tighter choke and if they are closer go with more open. so what i have is mod in my top barrel and i/c in my bottom or atleast thats what i think it is (4 hashes). how do yall set yours up?

Re: o/u question - 09/20/10 02:18 AM

improved on top and light modified on bottom works for me

Re: o/u question - 09/20/10 02:24 AM

I shoot mine with Mod on top and Imp/Cy on bottom.

Re: o/u question - 09/20/10 06:24 AM

My first shot will be a IC simply because the birds should be pretty close and my second shot will be a Mod since the bird should be a little further away by now. Works like a charm for me. I also use the Briley extended chokes in my yildiz. It's awesome

did you get those chokes at academy?

Re: o/u question - 09/20/10 01:19 PM

I have always used Mod. Imp. but I took off for South Texas last week and never changed my chokes from shooting skeet. I had skeet/ imp. and I couldn't miss, it really was amazing the birds that I hit with my new 20 gauge Yilditz. The first 6 shots I made I hit all six birds, couldn't find 1. But I am not changing anything!
just my .02

i've killed allota birds with a skeet choked gun.

I've shot improved cylinder for the last 5 years and knocked the snot outta birds from 10 to 35 yards out.

throw in two improved cylinder chokes and go to work, most of the time, especially if the bird is crossing, having two different chokes won't make a difference

How does a skeet choke compare to a imp cyl or a full? where does a skeet choke fall in the order of the different choke sizes? I have a new 20 O/U and I can't seem to git a bird with it. I have imp cyl over mod in it now. I hit 20 out of 25 targets at the skeet range the other day but can't seem to hit dove with it like I could with my old 12ga.

to the best of my knowledge, this is the order from most open pattern to tightest pattern......cylinder, skeet, imp cyl, light mod, mod, improved mod, full, fuller, fullest! I use skeet on top and light mod on bottom. Works well for me. Just bought my fiance some extended ported choke tubes from Carlson's and she loves 'em. They help reduce recoil (ported).

whats the advantage to extended chokes? i mean to justify 40 bucks a pop

easier to change out...also gets loose easier.

I use IC or LM for everything except turkeys and yotes then its ext full.

Re: o/u question - 09/20/10 09:06 PM

so theres no performance advantage?

Posted By: yukons95

Re: o/u question - 09/22/10 12:20 AM

no, unless they are ported no performance just reduced recoil. you just have the convenience of changing them quicker on the field without looking for a tool. but on mine i have to keep checking them because they will get a little loose sometimes. but no problem, just tighting them with your hand.

Re: o/u question - 09/22/10 02:44 AM

so the extended reduce recoil? or the ported reduce recoil?

Re: o/u question - 09/22/10 05:31 AM

I think the extended chokes do have some performance advantage, as the chokes have longer to reduce the size down to the desired diameter. I don't have much actual proof, but I like the way the carlson extended chokes better than the regular chokes.

Re: o/u question - 09/22/10 07:02 PM

When I had my o/u I used improved cylinder in the bottom and modified in the top. I rarely ever had to change them out and used the factory chokes most of the time.

Learned from an 'ol time trap shooter to shoot the bottom barrel first. So, that is what I did.

I'd take that shotgun to the range and test a few loads in it. I'm wondering if your pattern has holes in it for missing birds.

What shells are you using? Shot size? Length of shells?

It is also a very good idea to pattern your gun on a cardboard box. I have a 12 gauge that shoots high and right. It really helped figuring out where the majority of my pattern was traveling.

Re: o/u question - 09/23/10 02:40 AM

the extended only reduce recoil if they are ported. if they are not ported, no difference.

IC & SK, out to 67 yds last weekend, 12ga 7 1/2's

Re: o/u question - 09/23/10 09:29 PM

i shoot i/c out of the bottom barrel and mod out of the top. i bought some of those winchester expert steel shot 7's and have had no issues at all since. i was shooting heavy dove but these seem better
