Ive caught pigs in the trap before but never dropped one while out hunting. Took advantage of the bright moon last night and went to sit out. Around 10pm this big dude came out at 200 yards. Ive never shot at night before but I could see his outline pretty good through the scope and took the shot. He went about 50 yards and left the heaviest blood trail Ive ever seen. The 270 did the trick. His tusks are 4 inches long. Pretty cool looking. Im going to do a euro mount on the head, will post pictures of that when Im done, it will be my first time doing it. Got a lot of good meat on ice. No clue on weight, just know it was insanely heavy. Two of us could barely drag it a short ways. For reference in the pic, Im 6'1", 260 lbs, and my dogs are 80 lbs each.

hope you called the sheriffs dept. or game warden before you went out. game wardens get kinda testy when they get called out at night when someone reports possible night hunting/poaching. during deer season especially I am gonna notify them, done had that experience before when a buddy of mine did not call in and the 2 wardens that showed up about 1 a.m. were not happy with us.

Me either. You must hunt in a neighborhood somewhere, I've spotlighted hundreds of times and never even seen a game warden...

Never had a problem with spotlighting/ shooting varmints and hogs during season. After all it is 100% legal.

yep its legal, but the game warden aint gonna believe you arent spotlighting deer. we were visited about 30 miles south of Hondo, clear night, could see forever, saw no plane but they told us they spotted us from the air, like I said they were not happy, they will advise you to notify sheriffs dept. next time, there is always a first time...

You think Ben is gonna react that way? I know Jason never did, but now that he's made Captain it's a whole new ballgame...

I see you know some of our area game wardens...I do know when they got to get out of bed, drive a distance, get out and open several gates (and somehow they can get into any ranch they want to) and you tell em you were only shooting hogs or coyotes, they may just want to make that hassle worth their time and they can be picky...I have always been told to notify the sheriffs dept. at least. aint gonna take a chance...to old to take anymore.

thats a huge hog congrats...
ive hunted for the past year from about 6-3 a.m. never called the G.W. or police. Never had a visitor. I've also heard people in the area shooting during night. So not an issue.

Yeah, I met Ben a couple of weeks ago. Spotlight at our place all the time, have for years - Jason, never seemed overly concerned. We don't normally spotlight during deer season, but that's about not aggravating the deer way more than legalities. I'll be giving Ben a call after deer season...

Wow, didn't know this thread was about how to appropriately night hunt. I went back to the beginning and it doesn't say that he didn't call or call. So how did we get to this point? Guess I must be missing something.

With that said the hunt is done and the congrats is what is due, especially on such a nice hog. Once again congrats.
