Cur dogs are good for hunting with and when they bay a hog, you walk the pits in on a leash and turn them loose when in sight of the hog. They are just used to catch the hog, not hunt them. If you don't walk them in on a leash lots of times they will run out of gas before actually getting to the bay.

in your neck of the woods hounds might be a bit more common, but here in Texas, like Bowslayer said I would say there are more curs. I do it like he said, just use the pits or bulldogs to catch. Some people don't use a catch dog at all, and let the curs bay the hog and then shoot it.

As far as getting started goes, the best way is to find somebody that already hunts and go with them to learn the ropes. hunt with as many different people as you can before you start buying dogs, That way you can see what you want in a dog. Long range, short range, open, silent, rough or loose. How your dogs hunt will impact how much you enjoy hunting with them. start acumulating gear so you can spread out the expense(except cut gear, that needs to be sized to the dogs you get). I highly reccomend a tracking system.

there are alot of cur dogs around here problem is tennessee was really strict on hunting hogs for a while so no one really knows that its legal to hunt the hogs with a dog so very few even do it if any at all i cant find a single person that does it to go with and to learn some from but i do know that when i used to coon hunt alot i liked a dog that wouldn get out of hearing range i would like to get a dog that is already trained for a reasonable price would even pick the dogs up in texas if it was around houston or somewere kinda close?
