Have there been any post from land owners or from the Texas Parks and Wildlife on the hunting outlook for the TransPecos 2009 Muledeer Season? Fort Stockton area has had descent rain totals and land SouthWestof FS has had good growth of grass and forage. I predict an above fawn survival rate this year and hope that the rain has produced good antler growth as well.

Should be an awesome year!!!! Rains came on and we are still getting them. Our cottonseed piles have had 30 plus deer in the evenings feeding, both mulies and cola blanca. I saw quite a few fawns and also twins with mommas', a couple of weeks ago. I think it is going to be a banner year for the Trans-Pecos

Entire region looks great. Real green lots of fawns and quail hatchlings. Aoudad are big and fat as well.

7mag how does that cotton seed work on baiting mulies? Been thinking about using it for awhile now...

In South Hudspeth County we're still pretty dry overall, but we had a really good rain in May and another really good one over July 4th. So the early season rainfall was better than average. Hopefully it will be good through September. In general I think this is going to be a good year, because those deer that were born in 2002-2004 (when it finally started raining) are finally mature.

You can by bagged, but still a little high. Get with one of the area Gins and ask them what they get on it. You can do it 2 ways, pick it up yourself or have it put on a semi. Depending on how far and how much you may come out cheaper picking it up yourself.

2 ways to feed it. One is to just throw and scatter on the ground. If you have enough deer they will eat it up and it won't mold. The other is to make a round feeder with fence. Just roll it up, at least 2 feet in diameter, and stuff the seed in it. Wire it to a post and yur done. Doesn't seem to mold as quick.

Two other things to note on cottonseed:
1. If you have a lot of javelinas, they'll try to eat it before the deer will. So you might need to put a 3 foot fence around the area where you have it, say 20 feet in diameter, to keep them away.
1. Also the mule deer seem to be a little slow to take to cottonseed, so it might help to mix it with alfalfa for a while until they get the hang of it.

Soto plant always seems to work better as a mix, or just by itself
