shot two deer this week with a hornady V-Max outta my .22-250.

first one was a mature 100lb doe, heart shot at around 160 yards. further than i wanted the hunter to take the shot, but it was what it was.

at the shot, the deer took off like it wasn't hit. blood trail was good, she made it 80 yards and piled up. when i gutted it, the damage was considerable, not like a larger caliber but not shabby at all. heart and lungs were damaged very well.

the next deer, i shot at around 60 yards. shot her in the neck, and it looked like someone took a hatchet to her throat.

completely bled out when i picked her up.

I've always used gamekings in my .22-250....i'm not a advocate of body shots with the gun but i'll take a neck or head shot all day long at 125 yards and under.

seems like the V-max isn't a bad deer bullet in this little round as long as you stay away from the shoulder

I think you were luck you had a good blood trail, even the people on here that advocate the bullet for shooting deer have siad they leave poor blood trails.

I would agree, I shot a cullbuck last year a 50yds with a 60gr federal hollow point right in the boiler room and it ran 80yds with no blood trail at all in heavy fog....not fun at all and that broke me of using my favorite 22-250 for deer

i would agree with that.

its not a body shooting round.....but i am glad to know if you had to put one in the boiler room it would at least do some damage.

Im not saying I dont think you can kill a deer with them, I have killed many myself(neck and head shooting), but if I shoot an animal in a part of the body where I expect it to run, aka a behind the shoulder shot, I want a bullet that will pass through regardless of the animal falling dead on the spot or running so I can reliably track if needed.

I loved them for neck/head shooting though.

where i hunt, its a pain in the A to track them period....regardless if there is blood or not. in the bottoms it isn't so bad...but up on higher ground in the black brush you will have a hard time deciphering if the blood is yours or the deer's.
